Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the chart and the table, while also making relevant comparisons. For instance, you correctly identify that full-time undergraduates are the dominating sector at 44% and that academic staff make up the smallest proportion at 7%. Furthermore, you highlight key satisfaction levels, such as the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness at 95% and concerns regarding journal availability and wi-fi. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or lack full clarity, such as the overview which reads a bit simplistically with 'There are two things'. To reach a higher band, you need to provide a more sophisticated, fully integrated overview that captures the broader trends across both data sets without overly mechanical listing of percentages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the pie chart categories to the table satisfaction data. You make use of sequencing and transitional devices such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Secondly' to structure your writing. However, the cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or faulty, particularly in transitions like 'There are two things, first, library users and second, library users satisfactions', which lack smooth flow. Paragraphing is used to separate different sections of the visual data, but referencing and sentence-to-sentence connections could be tightened. To improve further, ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and naturally to link ideas together rather than simply marking lists of data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic statistical information such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'highest'. You attempt some less common vocabulary items like 'dominating sector', 'minor sector', and 'dissatisfaction', which shows an effort to vary your language. However, there are noticeable lexical and word-form inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'satisfactions' instead of 'satisfaction', 'moderate satisfaction' where an adjective is needed, and awkward phrasing like 'moderate happy' and 'not happy the reliability'. Spelling and word choices generally do not impede communication, but to achieve a higher band, you should refine your control of collocations and ensure accurate word forms when discussing data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures like 'while the minor sector is academic staff' and 'which is 95%'. There are some error-free sentences, but grammatical errors are present throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement errors, such as 'The pie chart and table illustrates' (should be 'illustrate') and 'academic staff and distance learning... has' (should be 'have'). You also drop necessary prepositions or articles in places, such as 'not happy the reliability of wi-fi'. These errors do not impede communication, placing your grammar firmly in the mid-range band. To reach the next level, you need to increase your control over complex sentence structures and eliminate basic agreement and prepositional errors.
