Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the proportion of different categories of library users at a university, while the table below reprents the satisfaction of library users on various features.

Overall, we can see in the pie chart, the proportion of full-time undergraduate students spend a lot of time in library where the number of academic staff is lower among all the categories. In the table, library users are very satisfied with all the available facilities.

In details, the total number of full-time undergraduate students spend the highest time in library which is 44%, followed by the full-time postgraduate students also spend quite longer time than other categories which is 25%. The part-time postgraduate students spend an average time in library that is 16%. The distance learning and academic staff are the least members to spend their time in library which is 8% and 7% respectively.

Moving on the below table, individuals are very satisfied with the facilities provided by authority, but among of them, the highest figure which is 95% peoples are very satisfied for helpfulness of staff and the least 45% peoples are happy by the availability of journals. Moreover, mostly 40% individuals are fairly satisfied by availability of books and just a 5% people are moderately satisfied by helpfulness of staff. Furthermore, 20% people are not satisfied by availability of journals and there is no person is found who is not satisfied by the opening hours of library and helpfulness of staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting the main features of the chart and table and making relevant comparisons. For instance, the student correctly identifies that undergraduate students make up the largest proportion at 44% and that academic staff account for the smallest share at 7%. Furthermore, key data points from the satisfaction table are highlighted, such as the high satisfaction rate for staff helpfulness at 95% and the lower rating for journal availability. However, the overview is somewhat inaccurate and misinterprets the data, claiming that full-time undergraduates 'spend a lot of time in library' rather than reflecting user categories, and asserting that users are very satisfied with all facilities despite data showing discontent (e.g. 20% for journals). Some details are under-developed or inaccurately described, which places this criterion firmly within the current band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the chart to the table. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, chart details, and table details. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In details', and 'Moving on the below table'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'among of them' or awkward transitional phrasing. While the organisation is clear enough to follow easily, the frequent reliance on basic or slightly clumsy cohesive links prevents the response from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic trends and figures effectively. There are appropriate attempts to use topic-specific terms like 'proportion', 'category', 'satisfaction', and 'availability'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include 'reprents' (a spelling error for represents), 'peoples' (an incorrect plural form), and awkward phrasing such as 'spend a lot of time in library' instead of representing user demographics. While these inaccuracies do not heavily impede communication, they reflect a restricted lexical control that prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'students spend the highest time in library which is 44%'. There are several grammatical errors in sentence structure, verb forms, and prepositions, including 'where the number of academic staff is lower', 'students spend quite longer time', and 'there is no person is found who is not satisfied'. Punctuation is generally functional, but articles and relative pronouns are frequently misused or omitted. These errors occur regularly throughout the text, though they rarely impede the reader's overall comprehension, placing the grammatical performance at this level.
