Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the 150-word minimum length requirement, containing 148 words. While the writer attempts to present information from both the pie chart and the table, the data is frequently inaccurate. For instance, distance learning and academic staff are incorrectly reported as '15% of total' rather than 8% and 7% respectively, and figures from the table are listed haphazardly as '50%,40%,10%' without clear contextualization. The overview provided at the end is very basic and contains arithmetic or summarisation errors, stating that helpfulness of staff had very satisfied users than others when staff helpfulness actually scored 95%. To improve, the student must ensure all figures are accurately reported from the visual data, write at least the minimum required word count, and formulate a clearer, more precise overview of the main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation with the use of transitional phrases such as 'To begin with' and 'Now moving to table chart', but overall progression is lacking. The text is divided into paragraphs, but grouping is sometimes illogical, and cohesive devices are repetitive and mechanical. Referencing and linking between sentences are weak, leading to choppy phrasing like 'Which was followed by' starting a sentence with a fragment, or 'Besides it, availablity of journals...'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use cohesive devices more accurately and naturally, ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, and avoid sentence fragments by correctly integrating dependent clauses into sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic terminology and repeats words such as 'satisfaction', 'users', and 'chart'. There are several noticeable word-form and spelling errors that detract from the quality of the writing, including 'availablity', 'parttime', 'percentile' (used instead of percentage), and 'despite' (used instead of depicts). Furthermore, phrasing such as 'table chart' and 'share in very satisfied' lacks natural collocation. To improve lexical resource, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise vocabulary relating to data representation and ensure correct word forms and spellings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates only a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the response, including missing articles ('survey of library at a university'), incorrect verb forms ('illustrates' used with a plural subject 'chart and table'), missing subjects or verbs, and punctuation errors such as missing spaces after periods. For example, sentences like 'To begin with pie chart, full time undergraduate had the largest share' and 'library opening hours had share in very satisfied' show poor command of grammatical patterns and prepositions. To reach a higher band, the student must improve sentence variety and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
