IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart and table illustrate the percentages of different categories of library users at a university.
Overall, the majority of full-time undergraduates accounted for the largest proportion of library users. Whereas, academic staff represented the smallest proportion of users. In terms of satisfaction, helpfulness of library staff received the positive response with the highest ratio of satisfaction. However, availability of books and reliability of wifi recorded comparatively the highest level of dissatisfaction.
One of the highlights, the ratio of full time undergraduate users was highest, compared to 25% full time post graduate learners and 16% of part time post graduate learners. However, distance learning study courses and academic staff groups used the least at 8% and 7% respectively.
Turning to the table, helpfulness of staff received most positive feedback with 95% of library users being very satisfied, and alongwith this library opening hours also recorded quite positive feedback with 65%. However, availability of books, journals and wifi recorded 50%, 45% and 48% respectively. Dissatisfaction of availability of journals was highest at 20% and followed by reliability of wifi at 19%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main features accurately: full-time undergraduates are the largest user group at 44%, while academic staff are the smallest at 7%. Your overview also highlights the strongest satisfaction result—staff helpfulness—and the comparatively high dissatisfaction with books and Wi-Fi. Most figures you report match the data. However, the overview says books and Wi-Fi had the highest dissatisfaction, although journals actually had the highest “not satisfied” figure at 20%, compared with 19% for Wi-Fi and 10% for books. The final paragraph also gives the very-satisfied figures for several services but does not report their fairly satisfied results. More precise comparisons across all three satisfaction categories would make the summary more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and transitions such as “Turning to the table” help signal the change in focus. The progression is generally logical, but some linking is mechanical or awkward. “Whereas” is used as a sentence fragment after “Overall,” and “One of the highlights” does not connect smoothly to the figures that follow. The repeated use of “However” also creates a contrast where the information is not always genuinely contrasting. To strengthen cohesion, use more precise links between comparisons and group related satisfaction results together, including the “not satisfied” figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “positive feedback,” “dissatisfaction” and “recorded,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than simply repeat “percentage.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing survey data: “the positive response with the highest ratio of satisfaction” is cumbersome, and “the ratio of full time undergraduate users was highest” is not a natural collocation. “Used the least” is also vague when describing the user categories. Spelling and form are mostly understandable, but “wifi” should be written consistently as “Wi-Fi,” and “alongwith” should be two words. Aim for concise, conventional chart language such as “accounted for” and “the highest proportion.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a comparison with “Whereas” and a longer sentence beginning “Turning to the table.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. “Whereas, academic staff represented…” is not a complete sentence in this position; connect it to the preceding clause or use “By contrast.” In “helpfulness of library staff received the positive response,” the article and sentence construction are problematic. The phrase “25% full time post graduate learners” also needs clearer grammatical framing, such as “25% of users were full-time postgraduate students.” Review hyphenation in compound modifiers and use complete, well-punctuated comparisons to improve accuracy while retaining varied structures.
