IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates categories of library users and the table provides information on library user satisfaction at a university.

Overall, the full-time undergraduate students are in majority whereas academic staff are fewest. Contrary to this, users are more satisfied with helpfulness of staff and library opening hours while they are fairly satisfied with availability of books and journals.

In the chart, around 44% of users are full-time undergraduates followed by full-time postgraduates which is 25%. However, distance learning and academic staff are in low proportion with 8% and 7% respectively.

Similarly, the table shows 95% users are very satisfied with helpfulness of staff while this proportion is half in availability of journals at 45%. People are moderately satisfied with books availability and journal availability with 40% and 35% respectively. 33% of the users are fairly satisfied with reliability of wi-fi compared to the 19% users which are not satisfied with wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main user group and the smallest group accurately, and your overview also highlights strong satisfaction with staff helpfulness and opening hours. Several figures are reported correctly, including 44% for undergraduates, 25% for full-time postgraduates, and 95% for staff helpfulness. However, the overview is not fully supported by the details: opening-hours satisfaction is mentioned but its 65% very-satisfied result is not reported, and the 65% figure is an important comparison with staff helpfulness. The table coverage is also selective: the response omits opening-hours figures and the not-satisfied results for books and journals. The statement that users are “fairly satisfied” with books and journals is imprecise because the largest response for books is “very satisfied” at 50%. More complete, precise reporting would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the chart and table. This makes the two visual elements easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Similarly” help signal relationships. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or not quite appropriate. For example, “Similarly” introduces the table even though it presents a different kind of information, while “Contrary to this” does not clearly express the contrast intended. The table paragraph also moves between satisfaction categories without consistently organising the comparisons by feature or response level. Grouping the table’s strongest and weakest results, then comparing the remaining categories, would create smoother progression and clearer cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “categories,” “proportion,” “satisfied,” and “reliability,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “in majority” and “in low proportion,” although these are not natural collocations. “Users are more satisfied with helpfulness of staff” is understandable but would be more precise as “users were most satisfied with staff helpfulness.” The phrase “books availability” is also awkward, and “moderately satisfied” does not accurately name the table’s “fairly satisfied” category. These word-choice and collocation issues do not prevent understanding, but more precise, natural phrasing would improve the report’s clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “while this proportion is half…” and the comparison introduced by “compared to.” Most sentences communicate the intended information, and errors rarely obstruct meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “the full-time undergraduate students are in majority,” the article and construction are not well controlled; “full-time undergraduates make up the largest group” is more accurate. “95% users” needs “of the users,” and “which is 25%” has an unclear reference that could be expressed as “at 25%.” The sentence beginning “People are moderately satisfied…” also has an awkward structure when listing two features and their figures. More consistently accurate noun phrases and clearer references would strengthen grammatical control.
