IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The pie-chart and the table here illustrates the percentages of the visitors in the library and their level of satisfaction regarding different available facilities.
In general, the pie-chart is comprising with the numeric reprensentaion of data of library users as academic staff, distance learning, part-time postgraduate, full-time postgraduates, and full-time undergraduates. However, the table elucidates the level of staifaction of users regarding the services and facilities as: library opening hours, helpfulness of staff, avaialbility of books and journals, and the reliability of wi-fi.
At firts the pie-chart disects aggregate of the visitors. The full-time undergraduates are approximately half of the pie-chart; whereas, full-time graduates are one-third of the whole chart. Rest proportion is distributed among part-time postgraduates, distance learning, and academic staff.
The information in the table narrates the level of satisfaction of the users for the available resources in library which facilitate them. The calculations of the servey are very encouraging as majority of users reported as very satisfied. Beyond this, fairly satisfied are also in enhanced number but comparatively less than very satisfied and are greater than not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify both visuals and give a broad overview that undergraduates form the largest user group, while the table shows generally positive satisfaction. However, the account is only partly developed: it gives no exact figures and omits the most useful comparisons in the table. For example, staff helpfulness has the highest very-satisfied result (95%), while opening hours also receive no dissatisfaction; by contrast, journals have the highest dissatisfaction (20%). The description of the pie chart also overstates the postgraduate share: full-time postgraduates are 25%, not one-third, and the remaining groups are not quantified. Report key figures and contrasts accurately, and make the overview more specific to cover the main patterns.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a general overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to distinguish. Some linking is effective, as in “whereas” and “Beyond this,” but progression within the paragraphs is limited because the table is discussed only in broad terms rather than organised around its strongest and weakest results. The opening overview also repeats much of the introduction by listing the categories and facilities. A clearer sequence—overview, then the main pie-chart proportions, followed by the most and least positive table results—would make the information easier to follow. Use comparisons to connect related figures rather than relying mainly on general transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “level of satisfaction,” “reliability,” “proportion,” and “aggregate.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing charts, such as “the pie-chart disects aggregate,” “the table narrates,” and “users reported as very satisfied.” Spelling errors, including “reprensentaion,” “staifaction,” and “avaialbility,” are noticeable and reduce precision. Some wording is also unnecessarily elaborate, for example “the available resources in library which facilitate them.” Aim for standard, precise chart language and check spelling carefully. Phrases such as “accounts for,” “shows,” and “were very satisfied” would communicate the data more naturally and clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “whereas” and a comparative structure in “greater than not satisfied.” Some sentences are understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “The pie-chart and the table here illustrates” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “the pie-chart is comprising with” uses an incorrect verb pattern. “The full-time undergraduates are approximately half” also needs a more suitable grammatical construction to describe a proportion. These issues sometimes make the intended meaning less clear, although the overall message can generally be followed. Practise accurate reporting structures such as “The chart shows that…” and “Undergraduates accounted for…,” and check subject–verb agreement and article use.
