IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the proportion of library users divided into five categories, and the table compares the satisfaction percentage at a university.
Overall, full-time undergraduate and full-time postgraduate are the highest users of a library while academic staff and distance learning are the lowest. A large number of users are very satisfied from helpfulness of staff.
The proportion of full-time undergraduate, who are utilizing a library, accounted for 44%, which is the largest figure among other users. Whereas the figure for academic staff and distance learning stood at 7% and 8% repectively. 16% users are part-time postgradute, which is 9 percentage point lower than that of full-time postgraduate (25%).
What is more, library user is very satisfied with library opening hours (65%), and helpfulness of staff (95%), while the remaining figure of proportion is for fairly satisfied category for both groups. Availability of books have half of users very satisfied, 40% users are fairly satisfied, and 10% users are not satisfied with it. Both availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi have quite relative figure for satisfaction.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main user groups and report their proportions accurately, including the largest group (full-time undergraduates, 44%) and the smaller shares for academic staff and distance learners. You also give a useful overview that staff helpfulness attracts particularly high satisfaction, and accurately report the opening-hours and staff figures. However, the overview could cover the satisfaction table more fully: the strong results for opening hours and staff contrast with lower satisfaction for journals and wi-fi. The final sentence says these two categories have “quite relative” figures but gives no values or clear comparison, so an important feature is left underdeveloped. Add their satisfaction and dissatisfaction figures, and make the overall pattern explicit, to extend the relevant points more consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall” and “What is more” help signal progression. However, cohesion is not always smooth or precise. “Whereas” begins a sentence fragment after the undergraduate figure, and “Both availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi have quite relative figure” does not clearly explain how the two sets of results relate. The final paragraph also moves quickly from one category to another without a clear comparison. Use complete linked sentences and organise the satisfaction data around the strongest and weakest results to make progression more controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “stood at,” and “satisfaction,” and the reader can understand the main comparisons. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the largest figure among other users.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “very satisfied from helpfulness” and “quite relative figure” do not express the intended meaning clearly. Spelling errors such as “repectively” and “postgradute” also reduce accuracy. Prefer precise chart language such as “the highest proportion,” “satisfied with,” and “similar satisfaction levels,” and check spelling and word forms carefully. This would make the vocabulary more natural and precise without requiring a more elaborate style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “full-time undergraduate, who are utilizing a library” and a comparison using “which is 9 percentage point lower.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “full-time undergraduate and full-time postgraduate are the highest users” has awkward number agreement, while “Availability of books have” should use a singular verb. The sentence beginning “Whereas” is incomplete, and “16% users are part-time” is missing an article or other determiner. There are also errors in plural forms and sentence construction. Build accuracy by checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentence boundaries, while retaining the complex comparisons you are attempting.
