IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie-chart and the table display the results of a survey based on library users at a university.
Overall, there are different categories of library users. The people who used the library most frequently were full time undergraduates, followed by postgraduates and the least frequented library users were the academic staff. The proportion of people who were satisfied with the library facilities was considerably higher than that of those who were dissatisfied.
The pie chart displays the categories of library users, the full-time undergraduates accounted for the highest proportion at 44%, followed by full-time postgraduates accounted at 25% and part-time postgraduates stood at 16%. While other users like academic staff and distance learners stood at 7% and 8%.
The table displays the user satisfaction for the facilities provided by the library, the highest levels of satisfaction were recorded for the helpfulness of staff with 95% of users very satisfied and only 5% fairly satisfied, followed by library's opening hours for which 65% of users were very satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied. Regarding the availability of books and journals, 50% and 40% of users were very satisfied while 10% and 20% were not satisfied. Lastly, for the reliability of Wi-Fi 48% of the users were very satisfied and 33% were fairly satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both visuals and provide a clear overview, identifying full-time undergraduates as the largest user group and staff helpfulness as the strongest satisfaction result. Most figures are reported accurately. However, the overview says users used the library “most frequently,” although the chart shows user categories, not frequency of use. The satisfaction summary is also incomplete: it omits the 19% dissatisfied with Wi-Fi and does not clearly compare the lower satisfaction results for journals and Wi-Fi. In addition, the figures for books and journals are compressed into one sentence, making it unclear which satisfaction levels belong to which facility. To strengthen the response, distinguish category size from frequency and report the key contrasts across all satisfaction rows more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: introduction, overview, user categories, then satisfaction results. This gives the reader a logical progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “followed by,” and “Lastly” help guide the comparisons. The paragraphing is appropriate and the two visuals are treated separately. Some connections are less smooth where several figures are packed into one sentence, particularly the sentence beginning “Regarding the availability of books and journals,” which makes the pairings harder to follow. The repeated opening “The pie chart displays” also adds a slightly mechanical quality. Use clearer sentence boundaries and explicit comparisons between facilities to make the progression more flexible and effortless.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You use a suitable range of task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “satisfaction,” and “reliability,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some flexibility in describing rankings and comparisons, for example “the highest proportion” and “the highest levels of satisfaction.” A few choices are imprecise or awkward: “most frequently” suggests usage frequency rather than the largest user category, while “least frequented library users” is not a natural way to describe the smallest group. “Stood at” is repeated, and “other users like” is informal for an academic summary. Aim for precise chart language such as “largest share,” “smallest group,” and “accounted for,” while varying reporting verbs and avoiding conversational phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “for which 65% of users were very satisfied” and a contrast introduced by “While.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some punctuation and sentence construction errors persist. The sentence “The table displays the user satisfaction for the facilities provided by the library, the highest levels…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; divide it or use a suitable conjunction. Similarly, the sentence about books and journals needs clearer grammatical separation of the figures. There are also awkward article and possessive patterns in “the full-time undergraduates” and “library’s opening hours.” More consistent control of clause boundaries and noun phrases would make the varied structures more accurate.
