IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of categories of library users and compares it with central room user satisfation. Overall, the large part of library is used by full-time undergraduates. The one-fourth is in the access of part-time postgraduates. A wide range of people are very satisfied from the help of workers.

Full-time undergraduates spent use library up to 44%. Academic employees use library 7%. 8% of the study room is used by the distance learners (all courses). Twicw of 8% is used by part-time postgraduates. Full-time postgraduates use library for 25%. Many individuals are impressed by the library services. For library opening hours: 65% very satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied, 0% not satisfied. For the helping facilities provided by workers: 95% extremely satisfied, 5% fairly satisfied, 0% not satisfied. For availability of books: 50% very satisfied, 40% fairly satisfied, 10% not satisfied. For availability of journals: 45% very satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied, 20% not satisfied. For reliability of Wi-Fi: 48% very satisfied, 33% fairly satisfied, 19% not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visuals and report the figures accurately, including the largest user group (full-time undergraduates at 44%) and the satisfaction results for all five services. The overview also identifies the dominance of undergraduates and high satisfaction with staff help. However, some comparisons are unclear or imprecise: “The one-fourth is in the access of part-time postgraduates” does not clearly distinguish the 16% part-time postgraduate group from the 25% full-time postgraduate group. The overview could also highlight that staff helpfulness received the strongest satisfaction, while opening hours had no dissatisfied users and journals had the highest dissatisfaction. These relevant but unevenly developed features fit the response’s current level; clearer synthesis would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response follows a broadly sensible order, moving from the user categories to satisfaction, and the repeated “For…” phrases make the service-by-service figures easy to locate. However, it is presented as one continuous paragraph, so the overview and detailed reporting are not clearly separated. Progression is also weakened by abrupt shifts, such as moving from the user percentages to “Many individuals are impressed” before listing the satisfaction data. Some linking is repetitive and list-like rather than showing comparisons between services. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and connect related results—for example, contrast staff helpfulness with journal availability—to create a clearer overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary such as “proportion,” “categories,” “availability,” and “reliability,” and the service labels are generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which makes parts of the report difficult to interpret. “Central room user satisfation” is not an appropriate description of the survey, while “the access of part-time postgraduates” and “spent use library” do not express the intended relationships naturally. “Helping facilities provided by workers” is also an imprecise substitute for staff helpfulness. Spelling errors such as “satisfation” and “Twicw” further reduce control. Prefer standard chart-reporting phrases and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some simple sentence forms and attempts a broader range, including “Overall” and clauses introduced by “For.” Most figures remain understandable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “The one-fourth is in the access…” has an unclear sentence structure, and “Full-time undergraduates spent use library up to 44%” combines verb forms incorrectly. The opening sentence also has an awkward comparison structure, and several fragments in the service list omit a full reporting clause. Build accurate patterns such as “X accounted for…” and “The proportion who were very satisfied was…”. Vary sentence structures while checking articles, verb forms, and complete clauses.
