Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the topic and make an attempt at an overview by noting that full-time undergraduates form the largest user group and academic staff the smallest. However, the response reports only a small part of the chart and does not describe the satisfaction table at all, so the main features and comparisons are largely missing. The figures are also imprecise: undergraduates account for 44%, not one third, and full-time postgraduates make up 25%, rather than one fourth exactly. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, which leaves too little detail to summarise the visual information. To improve, include an accurate overview and select key figures from both the user categories and satisfaction results.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a basic sequence: it introduces the visuals and then gives a brief overall statement. The opening phrase, “The chart and table,” signals the subject, and “Overall” attempts to mark the overview. However, the response is so brief that it does not develop a clear progression through the two sets of information, and there are no supporting details or comparisons to connect. The final sentence also combines several points without clearly separating them. Organise the report into an introduction, an overview, and one or two detail paragraphs, grouping related figures and using clear links such as “by contrast” or “regarding satisfaction” where appropriate.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “survey,” “percentage,” “full time undergraduate,” and “academic staff,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural: “use of library” and “use study center” do not clearly describe the proportions of users, while “reading room” is not the label shown in the chart. “One third” also gives an inaccurate description of the undergraduate share. Use precise reporting language and retain the chart’s categories, for example, “accounted for,” “represented,” and “the smallest user group.” More varied vocabulary for satisfaction would also help you report the table rather than relying on general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response includes simple statements and an attempt at a more complex overview, but grammatical control is inconsistent. In “The chart and table illustrates,” the plural subject requires “illustrate.” The phrase “full time undergraduate use of library one third” is missing grammatical elements, such as a verb and an article, and “full time postgraduate use study center one forth” has an unclear sentence structure. The final clause, “the academic staff lowest use,” also lacks a verb and a clear construction. These errors make parts of the message difficult to interpret. Practise complete comparative sentences, such as “Full-time undergraduates accounted for 44% of users, while academic staff made up 7%,” and check subject–verb agreement and articles.
