Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and comparison table depicts the outcomes of a survey of library usage at a university.

Overall, the pie chart presents the proportion of library users by categories showing that most of the library users belongs to undergraduate category and least library users are academic staff and distance learning students. While the table gives the comparison of library users satisfaction depending on library assets. It shows that users are more satisfied with staff assitance and library opening hours and least satisfied with wi-fi and journal availability.

The pie chart gives the information about library users. It shows that most of the library users are undegraduates at 44 percent while full-time postgraduate and part-time postgraduate learners shows the data of 25 percent and 16 percent. In contrast, the least library user categories are distance learning students and academic satff showing the proportion of eight percent and seven percent.

However, the comparison table provide information on users satisfaction with library assets. The data shows that the users peak satisfaction is with library staff assistance ranging at 95 percent and with library opening hours at 65 percent . Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both visuals and give a clear overview: undergraduates form the largest user group, while staff and distance learners are the smallest, and satisfaction is strongest for staff helpfulness and opening hours. The figures you report are generally accurate, including the user-group proportions and the satisfaction results for books, journals and wi-fi. You also identify the main contrast between high satisfaction and the less positive ratings. To make the report more fully developed, clarify that academic staff are the smallest group, rather than grouping them with distance learners as equally least numerous, and distinguish “fairly satisfied” from “less satisfied”: 40% are fairly satisfied with book availability, not less satisfied. A more precise overview of the table’s full pattern would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to separate discussion of the chart and table. This makes the information easy to locate, and contrast markers such as “In contrast” help signal comparisons. However, progression within the table discussion is less controlled: the response first reports very satisfied figures, then fairly satisfied figures, and finally dissatisfaction, but the categories are not always clearly distinguished. For example, “less satisfied with books availability” is used for the 40% fairly satisfied figure. Some linking phrases, including “In the same way” and “However,” do not express the relationship precisely. Grouping the table data by satisfaction level and using accurate references would make cohesion more flexible and clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing survey data, including “proportion,” “categories,” “satisfaction,” and “reliability,” and the reader can generally understand the comparisons. However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording such as “users,” “satisfied,” and “shows,” as well as several inaccurate or awkward collocations. Phrases such as “users peak satisfaction,” “library assets,” and “fair satisfaction level” are not natural in this context; “highest satisfaction,” “library services,” and “fairly satisfied” would be more appropriate. There are also spelling errors, including “assitance,” “satff,” “undegraduates,” and “conrast.” More precise, consistently accurate vocabulary would improve clarity and make the report sound more academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in agreement, sentence construction and punctuation are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “The pie chart and comparison table depicts” should use “depict,” while “most of the library users belongs” should be “most … belong.” In “full-time postgraduate and part-time postgraduate learners shows,” the plural subject also requires “show.” Several sentences have awkward or incomplete structures, such as “The wi-fi reliability shows satisfaction at 48 percent,” and spacing before full stops is inconsistent. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and building complete, direct sentences before adding complex clauses.
