Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart demonstrates the categories of library users at a university, and the table compares the user satisfaction.

Overall, full-time undergraduate students made the largest proportion of total library users. A fairly large percentage of the users expressed satisfaction with the library; all the students were satisfied with the helpfulness of the staff.

Full-time undergraduate students occupied 44% of the pie chart, followed by full-time postgraduate students occupying one-fourth of the chart, part-time postgraduate students 16%, distance learning 8% and academic staff 7%.

All of the students were satisfied with the library opening hours and the helpfulness of the staff; majority being very satisfied. On the top of the list being helpfulness of staff, which had 95% very satisfied users. With the availabilty of the books, half of the students were very satisfied, 40% were fairly satisfied and 10% were not satisfied. With the availability of the journals 45% were very satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied and 20% unsatisfied. With the reliability of wi-fi, 48% were very satisfied, 33% were fairly satisfied and 19% were not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features accurately: undergraduates form the largest user group at 44%, while academic staff are the smallest at 7%, and the satisfaction figures reported for each service match the table. The overview also identifies the strong result for staff helpfulness. This gives the report a clear, relevant account of both visuals. However, the statement that “all of the students were satisfied” is too broad: the table covers library users, not only students, and some users were not satisfied with books, journals and wi-fi. The opening-hours result is correctly described as entirely satisfied, but the overview could more clearly compare the high satisfaction for staff and opening hours with the lower results for journals and wi-fi. These small over-generalisations limit further development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall sequence: an introduction, an overview, the user-category figures, and then satisfaction results. This makes the information easy to locate, and the two visuals are both covered. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or awkward. The repeated openings “With the availability…” and “With the reliability…” make the final paragraph read like a list, while “On the top of the list being…” is not a complete, smoothly connected sentence. The overview and detail paragraphs could also be linked more explicitly by grouping the strongest satisfaction results together and then contrasting them with the weaker areas. Paragraphing is appropriate, but more varied transitions and clearer sentence connections would make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

Vocabulary is adequate for describing the visuals, with useful terms such as “proportion,” “satisfaction,” “availability,” and “reliability.” The writer also varies some expressions for the figures, including “followed by” and “occupied.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for formal data reporting: “occupied 44% of the pie chart” and “occupying one-fourth of the chart” are less direct than saying these groups accounted for those shares. “On the top of the list” is also an awkward collocation, and “availabilty” is misspelled. Repetition of “satisfied” and “availability” is understandable but could be reduced through accurate alternatives such as “rated positively” or “access to.” Greater precision and more natural collocations would strengthen the vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple sentences and some more developed structures, and most of the data remains understandable. There are, however, some grammatical problems, particularly in sentence construction. “On the top of the list being helpfulness of staff” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence; it could be revised to “Helpfulness of staff ranked highest, with 95% very satisfied.” The phrase “majority being very satisfied” is also an incomplete construction in its current context. In addition, “All of the students were satisfied” uses an inaccurate subject for the table’s respondents. Sentence boundaries and punctuation are generally manageable, but more consistent control of complete clauses and varied complex structures is needed.
