IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In the pie chart we have given five different categories of library users, in which mostly are students of different levels and the rest is academic staff. It can be seen that full-time undergraduates uses the library most of the time, whereas academic staff follows the opposite behaviour. Approximately 70% of the users of library are full time students, whereas only 8% of students are from distance learning background. Even part-time postgraduate students also share 16% of the total users of library. Moreover, from the table it can be seen that the staff is really helpfull as all the users of any categories are mostly satisfied with the staff. On the other hand, in terms of the availabilty of the journals there are some user who voted against it, which shows the need of more journals in the library. Logically, journals are mostly used by postgraudate students for their research purposes, and they find lack of journals availability, whereas in terms of availability for the books most of the users voted in favour and are fairly satifsided. Undergradyates students are the one who are more relied on textooks, and hence get more votes in favour. In terms of connectivity, the table shows more than 50% are fairly satisfied or either not satisfied at all. Overall, the frame together conclude that library is mostly used by full time students and everyone is somewhat satisfied by its services.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both visuals and identify several important patterns: full-time undergraduates form the largest user group (44%), academic staff the smallest (7%), and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating (95% very satisfied). You also note the comparatively weaker ratings for journals and wi-fi. However, the overview that “everyone is somewhat satisfied” is too broad: satisfaction varies, and 20% are not satisfied with journals while 19% are not satisfied with wi-fi. The claim that about 70% are full-time students is not clearly supported by the categories, and explanations about postgraduate research needs and undergraduates’ textbook use are speculation rather than chart data. More precise comparisons and a clearer summary of the main satisfaction results would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response moves from user categories to satisfaction results and ends with an overall statement, so the reader can follow its broad direction. However, the information is presented as one continuous paragraph, and the progression within the table discussion is difficult to track: staff helpfulness, journals, books, and wi-fi are discussed without a clear organising pattern. Connectors such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “Logically” are used, but some do not express a clear relationship between the data and the following claim. For example, the explanation about postgraduate research interrupts the comparison of satisfaction figures. Use separate paragraphs for the chart and table, and group the strongest and weakest ratings to create clearer progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “categories,” “availability,” “connectivity,” and “satisfied,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. There are, however, repeated spelling errors and awkward or imprecise collocations, such as “helpfull,” “availabilty,” “postgraudate,” and “more relied on textbooks.” Phrases such as “follows the opposite behaviour” and “the frame together conclude” are not natural ways to describe chart data. Some wording also makes the intended comparison unclear, including “more than 50% are fairly satisfied or either not satisfied at all.” Choose standard reporting expressions and check spelling and word forms; this would make the vocabulary more accurate and appropriate to an academic summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, using clauses with “whereas,” “as,” and “which,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors recur, particularly subject–verb agreement and plural forms: “full-time undergraduates uses” should be “use,” and “there are some user” should be “there are some users.” Articles and sentence construction are also sometimes inaccurate, as in “the staff is really helpful” and “the frame together conclude.” The long sentence beginning “Logically, journals are mostly used…” combines several claims and becomes difficult to control. Aim for shorter, complete sentences and check agreement, articles, and plural endings while retaining a few well-formed complex structures.
