Student answer (Band 5.0)

The pie chart presents the outcomes of a survey of library users at a university and the table depicts their distribution. Overall, the chart shows the categories of library users and the table iluustrates the satisfaction level of library users in term of percentage.

A large portion of library user shared by full-time undergraduates. Additionally 25% of the users are full-time postgraduates followed by part-time postgraduates which share 16% of the total share. Distance learners and academic staff are the users which share 8% and 7%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response identifies the two visuals and reports several user-category figures accurately: undergraduates are the largest group, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25% and part-time postgraduates at 16%, with distance learners and academic staff at 8% and 7%. However, it does not report the satisfaction results in the table at all, and the overview merely says what each visual shows rather than highlighting key findings, such as staff being rated very helpful or opening hours receiving strong satisfaction. The response also ends before completing its final comparison. It contains 77 words, below the required 150, which leaves the task substantially incomplete. To improve, provide a clear overview and select and compare important figures from both visuals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic sequence: the opening introduces the chart and table, and the next paragraph begins describing the user categories. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” and “followed by” help signal the relationship between points. However, the response is too brief to establish a clear progression across the task, and it stops mid-sentence after “share 8% and 7%.” The table is not integrated into the account, so the reader receives no organised comparison of satisfaction levels. Paragraphing is present, but the second paragraph does not develop into a complete report. Use separate, purposeful sections for the overview and the main comparisons, and ensure each sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses some appropriate task vocabulary, including “outcomes,” “distribution,” “satisfaction level,” and “full-time undergraduates.” It also attempts to vary wording with “depicts” and “illustrates.” However, several expressions are awkward or imprecise: “a large portion of library user shared by” does not clearly express that undergraduates form the largest group, while “share 16% of the total share” is repetitive. “In term of percentage” is also an unnatural phrase, and “iluustrates” contains a spelling error. These choices make the report less natural, although the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for precise collocations such as “accounted for” and “represented,” and check spelling and avoid repeating “share.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, such as “Overall, the chart shows … and the table …,” and the figures are mostly placed in understandable clauses. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “A large portion of library user shared by full-time undergraduates,” the sentence lacks a clear grammatical structure and the subject–verb relationship is faulty. “Distance learners and academic staff are the users which share 8% and 7%” also has an awkward relative clause and is left without final punctuation. The opening sentence is more controlled, but the short response provides little evidence of a wider range of accurate structures. Practise complete comparison sentences, for example, “Full-time undergraduates accounted for 44% of users, compared with 25% for full-time postgraduates.”
