Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart demonstrates the percentage of different categories of library users at a university whereas the table shows the percentage satisfaction of users on basis of numerous factors.

The largest percentage of users are full-time undergraduates which is 44 % followed by full-time postgraduate users whose percentage is 25. Then comes the part time postgraduates with percentage 16. Whereas Academic staff and Other distance learning are nearly of same percentage with academic staff has lowest percentage of all 7% and distance learning users are 8%.

The table divided the users satisfaction in three coulmns ranging from very satisfied to not satisfied. The maximum satisfaction is 95% for helpfulness of staff followed by opening hours with 65%. These two factors have zero percent non-satisfaction. Oher factors include availability of books and journals which have medium range of satisfaction for books its 50% and 45% for journals availabilty. Maximum percentage for non-satisfaction is 20 for Journals availabilty followed by Reliabilty of wifi with 19%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visuals and identify several important features: undergraduates form the largest user group, staff the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. Most figures are accurately reported, including the 44%, 25%, 16%, 7% and 8% user shares and the 95% and 65% satisfaction results. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary of the satisfaction pattern, such as noting that every category has more users who are very or fairly satisfied than not satisfied. Some comparisons are also incomplete: for example, the table’s fairly satisfied figures are largely omitted, and the 50% figure for books is not compared with the other satisfaction levels for that category. A concise overview and fuller reporting of key contrasts would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a sensible overall arrangement: it first describes the pie chart and then turns to the satisfaction table, with each visual given its own paragraph. Sequencing within the first paragraph is also clear, moving from the largest user group to the smaller categories. Linking expressions such as “whereas,” “followed by” and “then” help show relationships. However, the second paragraph becomes a list of figures rather than a clearly developed comparison, and the final sentence combines journals and wi-fi without explaining their relative satisfaction patterns. Some transitions, including “These two factors” and “Other factors,” are broad and do not always make the intended comparison precise. Organise the table details around strongest and weaker satisfaction, and use clearer references between figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a sufficient range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “satisfaction,” “availability,” “helpfulness” and “non-satisfaction,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are also useful attempts to describe ranking and comparison, such as “largest,” “followed by” and “maximum.” However, several expressions are awkward or imprecise, including “satisfaction of users on basis of numerous factors,” “medium range of satisfaction” and “Other distance learning.” Repetition of “percentage” and “satisfaction” also limits flexibility. Spelling errors such as “coulmns,” “Oher,” “availabilty” and “Reliabilty” detract from accuracy. Aim for natural collocations such as “user satisfaction with” and “a moderate level of satisfaction,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrastive opening with “whereas” and a relative clause in “whose percentage is 25.” The main comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The largest percentage of users are” has a mismatch between the singular subject and verb, while “with academic staff has lowest percentage” is an incomplete and incorrectly structured clause. Articles and prepositions are also sometimes missing, as in “on basis of” and “has lowest percentage.” The sentence beginning “The table divided the users satisfaction” uses an incorrect verb form and possessive construction. Improve control by checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete clause structure; varied sentence patterns are useful, but they need more consistent accuracy.
