IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The circular figure illustrates the five categories of the library urers. According to the illustration, almost 93% of the library users are students including full-time undergraduates, full-time postgraduates, part-time postgraduates, and those who are distance learners. Only 7% of the library users are the members of academic staff.

Among all the student catogeries full-time undergraduate students make most of the use of library almost 44% of its total usage. Full-time postgraduates and part-time postgraduates make 25% and 16% usage respectively. Distance learners are only 8% making them least percentage of users among students.

The 95% of library users are very satisfied with the helping nature of the library staff. Users are least satisfied with the availability of journals, even 20% of users are not satisfied with this aspect at all. 19% users are not satisfied with the reliability of the wi-fi but around half of the users (48%) are satisfied with this.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main user groups and report the key proportions accurately: undergraduates are the largest group at 44%, while academic staff account for 7%. You also select relevant satisfaction findings, especially the 95% very satisfied with staff helpfulness and the 20% not satisfied with journal availability. However, the overview is incomplete: it would help to summarise the broad satisfaction pattern, such as the strong ratings for opening hours and staff, alongside weaker ratings for books, journals and wi-fi. Some details are also unclear or imprecise, including “almost 93%” and “make most of the use of library”; the chart shows user categories, not library usage. More balanced coverage of the table would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a generally logical order: it first describes the user categories and then moves to satisfaction results. Paragraphing supports this division, and linking phrases such as “Among all the student categories” and “but” help show relationships between ideas. The progression is clear enough to follow, but the satisfaction paragraph presents selected figures without a clear overall comparison across all five aspects. For example, opening hours are not mentioned, despite their strong result, and the figures for books and journals could be contrasted more explicitly. Some references, such as “this aspect,” are understandable but could be more precise. A concise overview followed by grouped comparisons would make cohesion more flexible and the organisation more complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “categories,” “academic staff,” “satisfied,” “availability,” and “reliability.” These terms allow you to communicate the main data, and phrases such as “least satisfied” show an attempt to compare results. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “library urers” appears to be a spelling error, “make most of the use of library” is unnatural, and “helping nature of the library staff” does not precisely describe staff helpfulness. “Usage” is also misleading when referring to the proportions of user categories. Greater precision in describing survey groups and satisfaction levels, together with careful spelling, would improve control and clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the information remains understandable. For instance, the sentence beginning “According to the illustration” combines a main clause with a list of user groups, while “even 20% of users are not satisfied” attempts to add emphasis. Some grammatical errors remain, including the missing article in “use of library” and the awkward construction “make 25% and 16% usage respectively.” The sentence “The 95% of library users are very satisfied” also uses an unnecessary article before a percentage. These issues rarely prevent understanding, but more accurate article use and sentence construction would strengthen the response. Continue using varied structures while checking each sentence for grammatical completeness.
