IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart shows categories of library users, with full-time undergraduates using it more than any other category of students. Full-time postgraduate students account for 25% of library use, making them the second most frequent users after undergraduate students. Part-time postgraduate students take 16% of library use and are the third most frequent library users, while the two least frequent groups are those enrolled in distance learning courses and academic staff. Academic staff have 7%, while distance learning has 8% of library use. Full-time undergraduate students account for the largest share of library use at 44%.
The table below the chart shows library users' satisfaction percentages.
The rows represent different library features, while the columns represent users' satisfaction levels. As we see, 95% of users are very satisfied, and only 5% are fairly satisfied. With library opening hours and staff, there are no users who are not satisfied. 20% of users are not satisfied by the availaibilty of journals, only 45% users are satisfied while 35% of them are fairly satisfied. After journals, 19% of users are not satisfied with the reliability of Wi-Fi; only 38% are very satisfied, while the remaining 33% are fairly satisfied with it. As for the availability of books, only 50% of users are very satisfied while 40% are fairly satisfied; remaining 10% are not satisfied with it.
Both the chart and the table show the percentages of users using the library and its features.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main user groups and report their proportions accurately, including the dominance of full-time undergraduates (44%) and the small shares for academic staff and distance learners. You also cover all five satisfaction categories and note useful contrasts, such as the 95% very satisfied with staff helpfulness and the 20% dissatisfied with journals. However, the overview is limited: the final sentence merely restates that the visuals show percentages, rather than summarising the key pattern that satisfaction is generally high, especially for staff and opening hours, while journals and Wi-Fi attract more dissatisfaction. There is also a factual error: Wi-Fi very satisfaction is 48%, not 38%. Some comparisons are reported as separate figures rather than synthesised, so the main features are only partly developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall sequence: it describes the user categories first, then turns to the satisfaction table, with paragraphing that helps distinguish the visuals. Linking expressions such as “while,” “After journals,” and “As for” guide the reader through comparisons. However, the progression within the table section is somewhat list-like, and the opening sentence of that section (“The table below the chart shows library users' satisfaction percentages”) repeats information without advancing the summary. The final sentence is also a broad restatement rather than a concluding overview. Some references, such as “only 45% users are satisfied,” make the intended satisfaction category less clear. Grouping the strongest and weakest satisfaction results together would create a more purposeful progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “categories,” “account for,” “satisfaction levels,” “reliability,” and “availability.” These choices make the response understandable and allow you to compare groups and features. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward expressions: “45% users are satisfied” is unclear, and “not satisfied by the availability” is less natural than “dissatisfied with the availability.” The spelling error “availaibilty” and the inconsistent form “Wi-Fi” also reduce accuracy. Repetition of “users,” “satisfied,” and “library” limits flexibility, while phrases such as “using the library and its features” are imprecise. More precise terms such as “share,” “rating,” and “dissatisfied” would help express the data more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You show a useful mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses in “while the two least frequent groups are…” and the contrastive construction “As for the availability of books…”. Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. For example, “only 45% users are satisfied” needs an article or a different construction (“only 45% of users…”), and “the remaining 33% are fairly satisfied with it” has an unclear reference because the preceding figure is incorrect. The sentence beginning “With library opening hours and staff” also combines two separate table categories in a way that makes the comparison less precise. Greater control of articles, percentage constructions, and clear references would strengthen accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
