Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrates survey results indicating the proportion of different library users of a particular university, while the table shows the satisfaction level for five amenities provided to the library users.
Overall, full time undergarduate and postgraduate students accounted for the highest proportion collectively, where undergraduates contributes the most among all the library users. In addition, most of the library users were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff, whereas remaining categories contained relatively same percentage of vary satisfied and fairly satisfied users.
To start with, among the five categories of library users, 44% was attributed to full-time undergraduate students, which is also the largest share among all the users. Similary, full-time postgraduate pupils accounted for 25%. On the other hand, part- time masters students and distant learners contributed relatively less with 16% and 8% respectively. Moreover, only 7% was shared by the academic staff.
Furthermore, library users showed the highest proportion of satisfaction towards helping nature of the staff with 95% very satisfied and only 5% fairly satisfied. 65% of the library users were very satisfied with opening hours of the library, while the remaining 35% were fairly satisfied. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You identify the main features accurately: undergraduates are the largest user group at 44%, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating, at 95% very satisfied. The overview also recognises that the two postgraduate groups and distance learners are smaller. This gives the response a clear, relevant summary of both visuals. However, the overview’s claim that the other categories have “relatively same” proportions of very and fairly satisfied users is too broad: opening hours are 65% versus 35%, while the other three facilities show more varied figures. The final paragraph also groups books, journals and wi-fi together without reporting their distinct satisfaction patterns. More precise comparisons, especially for these three rows, would make the coverage more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with the user categories and satisfaction data handled in a logical sequence. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “To start with” and “Furthermore” help signal the progression, and the reader can follow the comparisons without difficulty. This is a strong, coherent structure. To make the cohesion more flexible and precise, avoid relying on broad transitions such as “On the other hand” when the relationship is simply a contrast in size, and connect the final facility comparisons more explicitly. For example, separate the figures for books, journals and wi-fi rather than referring to them collectively as having “mixed feedback”; this would also make the paragraph’s progression clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “share,” “satisfaction” and “reliability.” These choices generally communicate the data clearly, and there are attempts at more descriptive phrasing such as “the largest share.” However, several word-choice, collocation and spelling slips reduce precision: “helping nature of the staff” is less natural than “helpfulness of staff,” “distant learners” is not the chart’s category, and “vary satisfied,” “Similary” and “reliablity” are inaccurate forms. “Part-time masters students” also changes the stated category. Aim for accurate chart labels and conventional collocations, and proofread spelling; this would build on the adequate range already shown and make the language more consistently precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “while the remaining 35% were fairly satisfied” and a relative clause in the opening sentence. Most meanings remain clear, and the response shows some control of sentence construction. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. In the overview, “undergraduates contributes” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “full time undergarduate and postgraduate students accounted for the highest proportion collectively” is awkwardly constructed. There are also problems with number and phrasing in “44% was attributed” and “only 7% was shared.” Review agreement, plural forms and sentence construction, and use direct formulations such as “Undergraduates accounted for 44%.” Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
