IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the categories of library users in percentage and the table shows the users satisfaction level with the library facilities, also in percentage.

Overall, a great proportion of the on-campus students are using the library and they are very satisfied with the facilities. The educational amenities of the library are an issue causing dissatisfaction among the users.

Full-time undergraduate students account for 44% of library users and they are the highest percentage of users. The full-time postgraduate students account for 25% of library users being the second highest among all. A moderate proportion of part-time postgraduates are using the library at 16%. Distance learning for all courses and academic staffs are the minimal proportion of people using the library, at 8% and 7% respectively.

The users are satisfied with the library opening hours and helpfulness of staffs with zero reports of dissatisfaction. 65% and 95% of the users reported to be very satisfied with the opening hours and staffs of the library, respectively. Fairly satisfied users accounted for 35% for opening hours and only 5% for staffs helpfulness. However, the availability of books and journals accounted for 10% and 20% of users to be dissatisfied, respectively. The reliability of WI-FI was another point of slight dissatisfaction among the users. Even though there were minimal dissatisfaction among the users due to book, journals and wifi, the percentage of individuals that were satisfied with the same facilities surpassed the percentage of dissatisfied users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both visuals and provide a clear overview: undergraduate students form the largest user group, while opening hours and staff helpfulness receive strong satisfaction ratings and books, journals and Wi-Fi attract some dissatisfaction. Most figures are reported accurately, including the user-group proportions and the opening-hours and staff results. The comparison that satisfaction exceeds dissatisfaction for books, journals and Wi-Fi is also supported by the table. However, the overview’s claim that “on-campus students” make up a great proportion is not directly established by the chart, and “educational amenities” is vague. The Wi-Fi discussion would be more informative if it included its 48% very satisfied and 19% not satisfied figures. This is a relevant, well-covered response, but some key points are less precise or developed than they could be.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two sets of information easy to follow, and contrasts such as “However” help signal a change from positive to less positive results. The final sentence also attempts to synthesise the satisfaction figures. At times, though, cohesion is a little mechanical or the reference is unclear: “the same facilities” refers broadly to books, journals and Wi-Fi, while “Even though there were minimal dissatisfaction” is an awkward link to the preceding point. The satisfaction paragraph also moves through several facilities without consistently presenting the same categories of ratings. Grouping the strongest results together and then comparing the remaining facilities would create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for describing charts, including “account for,” “proportion,” “dissatisfaction” and “surpassed,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “reported to be very satisfied.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural: “a great proportion” is less suitable than “a large share,” “educational amenities” does not clearly identify books and journals, and “minimal proportion” is awkward for the smallest user groups. “Academic staffs” and “helpfulness of staffs” also use an unsuitable plural form for staff in this context. Use precise labels from the table and favour natural chart language, such as “the smallest groups” and “staff helpfulness.” This would make the vocabulary more accurate and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate the intended comparisons. For example, the sentence beginning “Even though” shows an attempt to express concession, while the figures are often placed in clear subject–verb structures. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “the users satisfaction level,” the possessive form is needed; “a great proportion … are” has a mismatch between the singular head noun and verb; and “accounted for 10% and 20% of users to be dissatisfied” has an incorrect construction. The clause “Even though there were minimal dissatisfaction” also has a number/agreement problem. Review possessives, agreement with collective or quantity phrases, and the patterns used after “account for.” These issues rarely prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy.
