Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given chart and table illustrate the outcomes of a survey of users of a library at a university.

Overall, the chart clearly depicts that full-time undergraduates use more library while academic staff use the least. The table shows most users are satisifed by the helpfulness of staff while most are fairly satisfied and not satisfied by the availability of books and journals respectively.

Pie chart depicts the categories of library users which are 44% full-time undergraduates followed by 25% of full-time postgraduates. Moreover, part-time postgraduate students are of a total 16% while distance learners and academic staff shares nearly the same percentage of 7% and 8%.

Conversely, in the table, 65% of users are satisfied with the library opening hours with 35% of the rest showing fair calm. Besides this, users on availability of books and journals show less soothe as 10 and 20% are not satisifed with the availability while nearly half of them shows satisfaction. Same is the case with wi-fi as 48% are satisfied followed by 33% percent having balanced opinion with 19% showing no change. Helpfulness of staff remains good with 95% satisfaction .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main user group accurately (full-time undergraduates, 44%) and the smallest (academic staff, 7%), and you report several satisfaction figures correctly, including 95% for staff helpfulness and 65% for opening hours. This covers both visuals and gives an overall summary. The overview is not fully precise, however: saying users are “most fairly satisfied and not satisfied” with books and journals blurs the separate response categories. For books, the largest group is very satisfied (50%); for journals, very satisfied is also the largest group (45%), while 20% are not satisfied. The opening-hours description also misstates the 35% as “fair calm.” To strengthen the response, distinguish the three satisfaction levels consistently and highlight the contrast between staff helpfulness and lower ratings for journals and wi-fi.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Conversely” signal relationships between points. Some linking is mechanical or not quite logical, particularly “Conversely” before the table, since the table adds a second set of information rather than directly opposing the chart. The final paragraph also moves rapidly between opening hours, books, journals, wi-fi, and staff helpfulness, with limited comparison or grouping. Organise satisfaction results into clearer contrasts—for example, strongest ratings versus weaker areas—and use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “categories,” “availability,” “satisfaction,” and “reliability,” and you attempt to vary your wording. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural enough to make parts of the report difficult to interpret. “Fair calm” does not describe a satisfaction category, while “less soothe” and “balanced opinion” are not suitable descriptions of the survey responses. “No change” also misrepresents the “not satisfied” category. There are spelling errors in “satisifed,” and phrases such as “use more library” and “shares nearly the same percentage” show weak collocation or word form. Prefer precise, conventional chart language such as “were very satisfied,” “were fairly satisfied,” and “accounted for.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences, including clauses introduced by “while” and “as,” and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, especially with agreement and sentence construction. For example, “academic staff use the least” needs a clearer object or comparison, and “distance learners and academic staff shares” has a plural subject with a singular verb. In “nearly half of them shows satisfaction,” the verb should agree with the plural subject, and the sentence beginning “Besides this, users on availability…” is structurally unclear. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as the extra space after “table,” and the final sentence lacks a full stop. Aim for complete, direct sentences with consistent subject–verb agreement.
