Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart and table illustrate the survey's results of users at a university.

Overall, full-time undergraduate and full-time postgraduate students use the library more than others. Library users are mostly satisfied for library opening hours and staff's helpfulness. However, some users are unsatisfied for other categories.

Full-time undergraduate by far have the highest percentage of library use, which is 44%. Full-time postgraudate also stands at one quarter. Other categories like, academic staff, distance learning, and part-time postgraduate use library by 7%, 8%, and 16% respectively.

Library user satisfaction table shows that, no users are unsatisfied by opening hours and staff's behaviour. 90% users are either fairly satisfied or very satisfied on availablity of books. However, there are one-tenth users who complains about availability of books. There are two-tenth users, who are unsatisfied on availability of journals, and 19% are complaining about wifi's quality too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main user group accurately: full-time undergraduates account for 44%, while full-time postgraduates make up 25%, and you report the smaller categories correctly. The overview also notes the strong satisfaction with opening hours and staff helpfulness, and the figures you give for books, journals and wi-fi are broadly accurate. However, the satisfaction summary is incomplete: the table also shows 48% very satisfied with wi-fi and 45% with journals, which would help compare positive responses across categories. Some wording is unclear, such as “some users are unsatisfied for other categories,” and the response is 143 words, below the required 150. Add a concise comparison of the satisfaction results and a little more detail to cover the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two sets of information easy to distinguish, and transitions such as “Overall” and “However” help signal the main points. At times, though, connections between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “However, some users are unsatisfied for other categories” does not specify which categories, while the final paragraph moves from books to journals and wi-fi without a clear comparison of their satisfaction levels. Improve progression by grouping the satisfaction results—for example, the strongest ratings first, followed by the less positive results—and use precise references to avoid repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing survey data, including “percentage,” “highest,” “satisfied,” and “unsatisfied,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some useful variation in phrases such as “by far the highest” and “one quarter.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “use library by 7%” would be more naturally expressed as “account for 7% of users,” and “complains about availability” is not suitable for reporting survey satisfaction. Spelling errors such as “postgraudate” and “availablity” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, neutral reporting language, and check spelling and common collocations before finishing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “However” and the relative clause in “users, who are unsatisfied.” Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. For example, “Full-time undergraduate … have” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “no users are unsatisfied” would be better expressed as “no users were dissatisfied”; and “90% users” needs an article or “of.” There are also punctuation issues, including the comma after “table shows that” and the missing space after “books.” Work on agreement, articles and consistent past-tense reporting, while retaining your attempts to combine ideas.
