IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The chart and table illustrate the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Overall, the chart shows the categories of library users, and the table presents the data on library user satisfaction. Varied categories of library users can be observed, such as academic staff, full-time undergraduates, full-time and part-time postgraduates and distance learners. Full-time postgraduates recorded the highest proportion of library use, while academic staff stood at the lowest. Users were most satisfied with the helpfulness of staff. On the other hand, some percentage of users were not satisfied with the availability of the books.
Most of the library users are students, making up to 93% in total, wherein full-time postgraduates borrowed most books and stood at 44%. Full-time postgraduates recorded almost half of that (25%). Part-time postgraduates and distance learners made rest of the share at 16% and 8% respectively. In contrast, the academic staff used the library way more less than the students and recorded only 7%.
All the users were either very satisfied or fairly satisfied with the library. Out of all the users, 10% of them were not satisfied with availability of the books, 20% with the availability of the journals and 19% with the reliability of wi-fi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify both visuals and give a relevant overview, noting that staff helpfulness received the strongest satisfaction and that academic staff formed the smallest user group. However, several key figures are misreported: full-time undergraduates, not postgraduates, were the largest group at 44%, while full-time postgraduates accounted for 25%. The claim that students made up 93% is also inaccurate; the student categories total 93%, but the response then describes the 44% figure as postgraduates. The satisfaction summary omits the strongest contrast—95% were very satisfied with staff helpfulness—and does not report the opening-hours results. You cover the task’s main areas, but some comparisons are unclear or underdeveloped, and accuracy needs closer checking.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on user categories and one on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to distinguish, and transitions such as “Overall” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. However, the progression within the user-category paragraph is weakened by confusing references, especially “Full-time postgraduates recorded almost half of that (25%),” which does not clearly identify the comparison and repeats a category. The final paragraph lists dissatisfaction figures without connecting them to the broader satisfaction pattern. To improve, group related comparisons more explicitly and use precise references so readers can follow each figure without having to infer its subject.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “recorded,” “availability,” and “reliability,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “stood at the lowest.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “borrowed most books” is not supported by the chart, which reports user categories rather than borrowing, and “way more less” is not a natural comparative expression. “Made rest of the share” is also imprecise. Choose vocabulary that describes the data exactly, such as “accounted for” or “represented,” and use standard comparative forms. This would make the report more precise and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “While” and the clause “making up to 93% in total.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices reduce accuracy. For example, “Full-time postgraduates recorded almost half of that” has an unclear reference, while “Part-time postgraduates and distance learners made rest of the share” is missing an article before “rest.” The construction “making up to 93%” is also not well formed for stating a total, and “All the users were either very satisfied or fairly satisfied” conflicts with the dissatisfaction figures that follow. Aim for clearer clause structure and check articles, comparisons, and consistency between sentences.
