IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart illustrates the categories of library users, while table shows the satisfaction level in different range. The data is expressed in the percentage.

Overall, full-time undergraduate was the highest users to use library, whereas academic staff accounted for the smallest share. Furthermore, more people were very satisfied with helpfulness of staff, while availability of books had the smallest number of satisfaction.

According to the pie chart, full-time graduates were the most prevalent user at 44%, the highest proportion among all sources. Full-time post graduates ranked second at 27%, followed by part-time at 16%. Distant learning accounted for 8%, while academic staff had the smallest share at 7%.

The table reveals notable changes over the level of satisfaction. People were highly satisfied by helpfulness of staff by 95%. Similarly, availability of books, availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi were categories in the all level of satisfaction, where 20% people were dissatisfied by the availability of journals, followed by reliability of wi-fi by 19%. On the other hand, helpfulness of staff and library opening hours has zero dissatisfied people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main user group and the smallest group, and your overview also highlights staff helpfulness as the strongest satisfaction result. However, some figures and comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: the chart gives full-time postgraduate users as 25%, not 27%, and “full-time graduates” at 44% should be full-time undergraduates. The claim that availability of books had the smallest number of satisfaction is not supported: its very-satisfied figure is 50%, while journals are lower at 45%. The table is only partly summarised; for example, opening hours (65% very satisfied) and the contrast between books and journals could be reported more clearly. More accurate selection and development of key comparisons would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for the chart and table. This makes the two sources easy to distinguish, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “According to the pie chart,” and “On the other hand” help guide the reader. The progression is not fully smooth, however. In the final paragraph, several satisfaction categories are grouped into one long sentence, and the relationship between the 20% dissatisfied figure and the preceding statement is difficult to follow. Some linking is also mechanical rather than showing precise comparisons. Use shorter, clearly focused sentences and connect each figure directly to the category it describes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “accounted for the smallest share,” “proportion,” and “dissatisfied,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “highest users to use library,” “in different range,” and “categories in the all level of satisfaction.” “Full-time graduates” also mislabels the chart category. Repetition of “satisfaction” and “availability” limits flexibility, while “notable changes” is not a good fit for a table showing satisfaction levels rather than changes over time. Aim for precise category names and natural phrases such as “the largest user group” and “satisfaction with library services.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of sentence forms, including a contrast in the overview (“whereas…”) and a subordinate clause beginning “while.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles are missing in “while table shows” and “use library”; agreement is incorrect in “full-time undergraduate was” and “opening hours has”; and the construction “People were highly satisfied by helpfulness of staff by 95%” is not formed accurately. The final table sentence also combines several ideas in a way that makes the grammar difficult to track. Practise article use, subject–verb agreement, and the pattern “X% of respondents were satisfied with…” to express data more reliably.
