IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart and table illustrate the outcomes of a survey of a university library user by category and their satisfaction level measured in percentage, respectively.

Overall, the library is mostly used by full-time undergraduates and least used by academic staff. While the majority of users are very satisfied with the staff's helpfulness and library opening hours, few remain dissatisfied regarding the availability of journals, and reliability of w-fi.

According to the results, 44% of the library users are full-time undergraduates, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%. Part-time graduates sit at 16%, which is double the proportion of distance learners of all courses at 8%. The least category of users are the academic staff with only 7% of total users.

User statistics reveal 95% were very satisfied with the staff's helpfulness, followed by 65% with the library opening hours. No dissatisfaction was observed for the aforementioned criteria. However, availability of journal received the most non-satisfaction level with 20%, followed by wi-fi reliability at 19%. Availability of books recieved 50% on very satisfaction level, followed by 40% on fairly satisfied, and 10% on not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and satisfaction is strongest for staff helpfulness and opening hours. The figures reported for user categories and the selected satisfaction results are accurate. You also identify the highest dissatisfaction levels for journals and Wi-Fi. To make the account more fully developed, include a direct comparison of satisfaction across all five services: for example, journals have the lowest very-satisfied share, while books and Wi-Fi receive intermediate ratings. The overview’s phrase “few remain dissatisfied” is broadly true but could be more precise, since dissatisfaction reaches 20% for journals.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is organised effectively: an introduction is followed by an overview, then separate paragraphs for user categories and satisfaction. This gives the reader a clear progression, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “According to the results,” and “However” help signal the relationships between points. Comparisons are generally easy to follow, including the ranking of user groups and the contrast between high satisfaction with staff and opening hours and dissatisfaction with journals. To strengthen cohesion further, connect the satisfaction figures more systematically rather than moving from the highest ratings to dissatisfaction and then back to books. A consistent sequence across the five services would make the final paragraph feel more unified.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “outcomes,” “proportion,” “dissatisfaction,” and “reliability,” and the meaning remains clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision. “Library user by category” is awkward, and “part-time graduates” does not match the chart’s label, “part-time postgraduate” (the latter is also the correct category name). Phrases such as “non-satisfaction level” and “very satisfaction level” are not idiomatic; use “not satisfied” and “very satisfied” or “satisfaction rate.” There are also spelling slips in “w-fi” and “recieved.” More precise collocations and careful checking of labels would make the vocabulary more natural and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast clause beginning “While the majority…” and the comparison “which is double the proportion…”. Most sentences communicate the intended information, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain. In the opening, “a university library user by category” has an unclear singular construction; “university library users by category” would be more accurate. “The least category of users are the academic staff” has a mismatch between “category” and “are”; revise to “The smallest user group is academic staff.” In “availability of journal received,” the noun needs a plural or article, and “received” is an awkward verb pattern for reporting a satisfaction result. These errors do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control of agreement and sentence patterns is needed.
