IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie chart presents the outcomes of a survey on categories of library users and proportion for their satisfaction level at a university.
Overall, five major library users were categorized based on full-time undergraduate and postgraduate, part-time postgraduate, distance learning for all courses and academic staff. The statistical data illustrated that full-time undergraduate students were at high proportion in terms of using a library at 44% which was almost twice than full-time postgraduate. Whereas, distance learning and academic staff contributing to the least, depicted almost same pattern at 8% and 7% respectively. Table also predicted the satisfaction level of library users on 3 main factors as very satisfied, fairly satisfied and not satisfied. Hence, a high percentage of students are satisfied by helpfulness of staff. On the other hand, availability of journals presented a lower proportion.
Data showing the satisfaction rate is quite fluctuating in which helpfulness of staff outweighed the other categories at 95% and only 5% were fairly satisfied while nobody was dissatisfied. Students prioritized library open hours and were highly satisfied at 65% and 35% were fairly satisfied. In contrast, high percentage of satisfaction for the availability of books, journals and reliability of wifi were quite similar, contributing for 50, 45 and 48% respectively. Dissatisfaction rate for the availability of journals was somehow higher at 20% than other categories.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both visuals and identify the main contrasts: undergraduates form the largest user group, while academic staff and distance learners are the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. The figures you report are generally accurate, including the 44%, 25%, 8% and 7% user shares and the 95% satisfaction with staff. This meets the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, the overview that “availability of journals presented a lower proportion” is unclear: journals have the lowest very-satisfied figure among the listed services, but the table also shows 35% fairly satisfied and 20% not satisfied. You could make the overview more precise by highlighting that staff and opening hours receive the strongest ratings, while journals attract the greatest dissatisfaction. Also report the wi-fi and book satisfaction breakdowns more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph focused on satisfaction figures. This helps the reader distinguish the user categories from the service ratings, and phrases such as “In contrast” signal a comparison. However, progression within the overview is sometimes difficult to follow because several points are packed into long sentences, and “Hence” does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding user-group data and the satisfaction claim. The final paragraph also moves quickly from staff to opening hours, then groups books, journals and wi-fi together without consistently comparing all three satisfaction levels. Use shorter, more focused sentences and organise the service comparisons around strongest satisfaction and greatest dissatisfaction.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction level,” “dissatisfied” and “prioritized,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “outweighed” and “contributing.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing survey data. “The table also predicted” suggests a forecast rather than reported results, while “high proportion” and “lower proportion” are imprecise when discussing satisfaction ratings. “Library open hours” and “wifi” could be expressed more formally as “library opening hours” and “Wi-Fi reliability.” Aim for precise collocations such as “accounted for,” “recorded” and “the highest/lowest satisfaction rating”; this would make the comparisons clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “while” and “in which,” and most of the intended meaning can be understood. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and comparison. For example, “which was almost twice than full-time postgraduate” needs a complete comparison, such as “almost twice the proportion of full-time postgraduates.” The sentence beginning “Whereas, distance learning…” is a dependent clause used as a sentence, and “distance learning and academic staff contributing” lacks a finite verb. There are also errors in “students are satisfied by helpfulness” and “contributing for 50, 45 and 48%.” Review clause completeness, verb forms and comparison patterns, and use punctuation to separate complete ideas. These corrections would improve accuracy while retaining your range of structures.
