IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart presents the proportion of library users by categories and the table gives the percentages of satisfaction against each factor.
Overall, full-time undergraduate students account for the majority of library users. The library users are most satisfied with the staff behaviour and least satisfied with the availablity of journals.
Majority of the library members are students, with full-time undergraduate students comprising 44% of the total members, followed by full-time postgraduate students at 25%, and part-time postgraduate students at 16%. Distance learning students make up just 8% while academic staff make up 7% of the total users ranking the smallest category among all.
The library users satisfaction data reports that students are most satisfied with cooperative behaviour of library staff, followed by library opening timing and availability of books. 95% of the users are very happy with the behaviour of the staff and the remaining are faily satisfied. While roughly majority of the members are very satisfied with the availability of journals and the working of wi-fi, a significant proportion of members are faily satisfied and around one-fifth of the users are not happy with these facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main user group accurately and give the correct proportions for all five categories, while your overview also highlights the strongest satisfaction result: staff helpfulness. This covers the chart and table and selects relevant features. However, the comparison of satisfaction is incomplete and partly unclear. You say users are least satisfied with journals, but do not report the key figures showing that 20% are dissatisfied with journals, compared with 19% for wi-fi and 10% for books. The claim that a “roughly majority” are very satisfied with journals and wi-fi also blurs the difference: the figures are 45% and 48%, respectively, both below half. Include these comparisons and clarify that opening hours have 65% very satisfied and no dissatisfied users to make the overview more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a logical route through the two visuals, and linking expressions such as “followed by” and “while” help show comparisons. The main limitation is that the final paragraph groups journals and wi-fi together without clearly distinguishing their figures from one another, so the progression of comparisons becomes less precise. The phrase “While roughly majority…” also leaves the contrast unfinished, making the relationship between the satisfaction levels harder to follow. Separate the satisfaction features into clearer comparisons and use explicit references to the percentages to maintain the otherwise sound progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “comprising,” “account for,” and “significant proportion,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific descriptions, such as “cooperative behaviour” and “availability of journals.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this chart, however: “staff behaviour” is not the measured category, which is the helpfulness of staff, and “library opening timing” is an awkward substitute for opening hours. “Very happy” and “not happy” are less suitable than consistent survey terminology such as “very satisfied” and “not satisfied.” Spelling slips in “availablity” and “faily” also reduce control. Prefer the chart’s precise labels and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, including “Overall, full-time undergraduate students account for the majority of library users.” The category paragraph also uses participial phrasing effectively in “comprising 44% of the total members.” Some grammatical issues remain, but they do not prevent understanding. For example, “Majority of the library members” needs a determiner (“The majority…”), and “The library users satisfaction data” needs a possessive form or a rephrasing (“The data on library-user satisfaction…”). In “While roughly majority…,” the article is missing and the clause is not completed with a clear contrasting main clause. Continue using complex structures, while checking articles, possessives and clause completeness.
