IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart categorizes different library users at a university and the table below it, shows the user satisfaction in different aspects.

A large portion of the pie chart, that is 44%, is covered by the full-time undergraduate. While 25% are full-time postgraduate. The part-time post graduates are only 16%. A very few percentage of academic staff and distance learning is mentioned that is 7% and 8% respective.

The other insights that were calculated from the survey were the satisfaction level of people from different library services. 65% people were very satisfied with the library opening hours and only 35% were unsatisfied. The helpfulness of staff left majority of the people, that is 95%, very satisfied and only 5% were fairly satisfied. For the availability of the books, 50% were highly satisfied and 40% were faily satisified while 10% were not satisfied at all. The availability of journals left 45% satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied and 20% not satisfied at all. At the last,8% were really satisfied with the reliability of wifi and 33% were fairly satisfied while the 19% were not satisfied at all.

The table clearly shows that the staff and opening hours are the most satisfying services of the library while other services had some, although small, not satisfied users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover both visuals and report several key figures, including the largest user group (full-time undergraduates, 44%) and the high satisfaction with staff helpfulness (95%). However, a significant data error weakens the report: wi-fi reliability had 48% very satisfied, not 8%. There are also category errors in the opening-hours figures: 35% were fairly satisfied, not unsatisfied, and the final overview says staff and opening hours were the most satisfying services without noting that staff satisfaction was markedly higher. The overview is present, but it is broad and does not clearly identify the lower satisfaction for journals and wi-fi. Check each table heading carefully and distinguish “fairly satisfied” from “not satisfied” when summarising the main patterns.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the visuals, describes the user categories, moves to satisfaction results, and ends with a summary. This makes the information generally easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical or awkward, however, as in “While 25% are full-time postgraduate” and “At the last,” and the long satisfaction paragraph presents many figures in sequence without grouping the strongest and weakest results. The final overview helps, but it would be clearer if it explicitly contrasted staff helpfulness and opening hours with journals and wi-fi. Use more precise transitions and organise the table data into comparisons rather than listing each service in turn.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary such as “library users,” “satisfaction level,” “availability,” and “reliability,” so the meaning is usually clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “a large portion … is covered by” a user group, “left majority of the people … very satisfied,” and “a very few percentage” do not express the data naturally. “Highly satisfied” and “really satisfied” also vary the wording without adding precision. Spelling errors such as “faily” and “satisified” are noticeable, and “post graduates” is better written as “postgraduates.” Aim for accurate reporting phrases such as “accounted for,” “were very satisfied,” and “the proportion of users.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt some variation in sentence structure, including a relative clause in “that is 44%” and a contrast introduced by “while.” Most of the message remains understandable, but sentence control is uneven. “While 25% are full-time postgraduate” is a fragment, and “A very few percentage … is mentioned” has problems with countability and agreement. Commas are also misplaced or missing in phrases such as “pie chart, that” and “people, that is 95%,” while “the table below it, shows” incorrectly separates the subject from its verb. Build complete sentences around comparisons and check agreement, articles, and punctuation. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the report easier to read.
