IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie and tabulation illustrate the outcome of a survey of using library by students at the university.
Overall, the highest users of the library are mostly full-undergraduate students while least users of library are academic staff. Regarding the table, all users were marked fully satisfied rather than fairly satisfied or unsatisfied. The scales are in the percentage.
To begin with, the pie chart is distributed in five different categories of library users. The full-time undergraduate students records the highest percentage nearly to half of library users at 44%, while academic staff has the lowest proportion at 7% among all categories. Part-time master's students marks twice than the distance learning, who opted all courses has figure 8%. The full-time postgraduate individual has one fourth portion for using library at 25%, which is second most after full-time undergraduate students.
Looking towards table, the students very satisfied by the helpfulness of staff 95% which marked as the highest while availability of journals had the lowest students are 45%. whereas, very satisfied students for library opening hours, availability of journals and connectivity of wifi are 65%,50% and 48% respectively. The students with fairly satisfied had least figure in helpfulness of staff with 5% and largest figure for availability of books 40% while, library opening hours and availability of journals have same figure 35% for fairly satisfied and wifi had 33%. For not satisfied students, there was none student with not satisfied for library opening hours and helpfulness of staff. Availability of journals and wifi records nearly same figure with 20% and 19%. Availability of books had 10% of students who had not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover both visuals and identify several important features: undergraduates form the largest user group at 44%, academic staff the smallest at 7%, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. Most figures are reported accurately. However, the overview says users were “fully satisfied rather than fairly satisfied or unsatisfied,” which misrepresents the table: satisfaction is divided across three categories, and some users were not satisfied. The later details partly correct this, but the overview should instead summarise the strongest and weakest satisfaction patterns. Also, “part-time master's students” is not the chart’s label; it shows part-time postgraduate users. These points make the coverage relevant, though some key features are unclear or not fully synthesised.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for the chart and table. This makes the two sources easy to distinguish, and sequencing expressions such as “To begin with” and “Looking towards table” help signal movement between them. The table paragraph also groups the satisfaction categories in a generally logical way. To make the progression more fluent, reduce repeated references to “students” and “figure,” and use clearer links when shifting between satisfaction levels. The long final paragraph contains many comparisons in quick succession, while punctuation around “whereas” and “while” sometimes obscures how the details relate. A more concise grouping of the table’s strongest and weakest results would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “highest percentage,” “lowest proportion,” “fully satisfied,” and “not satisfied,” so the main comparisons are understandable. There are also attempts at more varied phrasing, such as “second most” and “records nearly same figure.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “survey of using library,” “part-time master's students,” “marks twice than,” and “connectivity of wifi.” Repetition of “figure” and “students” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise chart language and natural collocations, for example, “accounted for,” “twice the proportion,” and “Wi-Fi reliability.” These improvements would make the description more fluent without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons and clauses with “while,” and the reader can generally follow the reported information. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “The full-time undergraduate students records” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the highest users of the library are mostly full-undergraduate students” is awkwardly constructed. In “there was none student,” the determiner and singular noun form are incorrect. Several sentences also run together or use punctuation inconsistently, as in the long comparison beginning “The students with fairly satisfied.” Work on building complete clauses, checking singular/plural agreement, and separating related comparisons into shorter sentences. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy.
