Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
You identify the largest user group, full-time undergraduates (44%), and correctly report the remaining categories as 25%, 16%, 8% and 7%. However, the response describes only the pie chart and omits the table’s satisfaction results entirely, so it does not summarise all the information in the task. The overview is also unclear (“there are high positions”) and includes an unsupported claim that users spend most of their time at the library; the chart shows user categories, not time spent. The response contains 112 words, below the required 150, which further limits the detail provided. To improve, include a clear overview of the satisfaction findings and compare key figures, such as staff helpfulness (95% very satisfied) with the lower ratings for journals and wi-fi.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an attempted overview, and two paragraphs describing the user categories. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and the categories are mostly presented in descending order. However, the overview repeats the same point as the later paragraphs rather than guiding the reader through the main features. Repeated openings such as “The pie charts…” and “In the pie charts shows…” make progression mechanical, while the table is not incorporated at all. Some links between ideas are unclear, including “since about a quatre time.” A stronger response would group the chart and table information logically, use a concise overview, and connect comparisons with clear referencing and linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “full time undergraduate,” “postgraduates,” “distance learning,” and “percentage,” so the reader can identify the categories being discussed. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “high position,” “expending time,” and “staying at library.” These choices sometimes obscure the intended meaning, particularly because the chart reports proportions of user categories rather than time spent in the library. There are also spelling errors in “postgraguate,” “quatre,” and “acadamic.” Aim for precise chart language such as “accounted for,” “represented,” and “the largest share,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the main percentages can generally be understood. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “there are high positions is full time undergraduate” has faulty sentence structure, while “The pie charts are shows” combines incompatible verb forms. Other problems include missing articles and prepositions in “staying at library,” and unclear agreement and phrasing in “most of time undergraduates are expending time.” The sentences also rely heavily on repeated basic patterns, with limited accurate complex structure. Practise forming clear subject–verb sentences and checking articles, verb forms, and sentence boundaries; for example, “Full-time undergraduates made up 44% of users” is both direct and grammatically controlled.
