Student answer (Band 7.0)

The provided chart and table illustrate the results of a survey done by library users at a university.

Overall, it is evident that the majority of library users are full time undergraduate, while the least number of users are academic staff. As for library users satisfaction of the services that the library offers, it is clear that the helpfulness of the staff is the service with the most satisfied users, in contrast to the availability of journals service being the lowest rated.

Initially, for the categories of library users, full time undergraduate come in the first place occupying a number of 44%. The second place is for full time students having a 25%. The rest of the lowest numbers of are three categories of users, part time postgraduate users with 16%, distance learning (all courses) with 8%, followed by academic staff with only 7%.

Meanwhile, when it comes to the services that the library offers and users satisfaction percentage, it is obvious that the helpfulness of staff got the highest satisfaction rate having 95% of users being very satisfied, also the library opening hours got a 65% of users satisfaction, both achieving a 0% dissatisfaction percentage, whereas the lowest went for the availability of books with 50%, followed by the reliability of wi-fi with 48% and the lowest rate went for the availability of journals, getting only a 45% satisfaction rate while having the highest of them all in dissatisfaction percentage with 20%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response selects the main features and gives a clear overview: undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating while journals perform least well. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 44%, 7%, 95% and 20% figures. The account also compares satisfaction across several services. However, the description of user groups calls full-time postgraduates “full time students,” which is imprecise, and the phrase “lowest went for the availability of books with 50%” could suggest books are the least-rated service, despite the later correction that journals are lowest. More precise comparisons of the fairly satisfied and dissatisfied figures would make the selected data more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a logical progression through both visuals, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile” and “whereas” help signal relationships. The overview also prepares the reader for the details that follow. Some transitions and ranking language are less controlled: “the lowest went for” is repeated, and the long final sentence combines several comparisons, making the hierarchy of satisfaction figures harder to follow. Grouping the satisfaction results into positive ratings and dissatisfaction, or splitting that sentence, would make the progression more precise while retaining the effective overall structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

There is an adequate range for describing the visuals, including “majority,” “satisfaction rate,” “dissatisfaction percentage” and “followed by.” These choices communicate the main comparisons, and the response varies its wording to some extent. However, several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “come in the first place,” “occupying a number of 44%,” and “the lowest went for.” “Full time students” also does not accurately name the full-time postgraduate category. More natural chart language and more precise category labels would improve flexibility and collocation. For example, use “accounted for 44%,” “ranked second,” and “received the lowest satisfaction rating” rather than the less idiomatic phrases used here.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple statements and more complex structures, including clauses introduced by “while,” “whereas” and “when it comes to.” Meaning remains clear, and some sentences are controlled, particularly the overview. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction persist: “full time undergraduate come” should be “full-time undergraduates account,” and “the lowest numbers of are three categories” is not a well-formed clause. The final sentence is also overloaded, with several clauses and comparisons joined together, which weakens grammatical control. Check subject–verb agreement, use complete and direct clause structures, and divide long sentences so that each comparison has a clear grammatical frame.
