Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart below illustrates categories of library users in a university.

At a cursory glance, it is evident that full-time undergraduates have the highest percentage. Followed by, full-time postgraduates and part-time graduates. Meanwhile, academic staff and people who have enrolled themselves in all courses are the least frequent users of library. On the contrary, most individuals are extremely satisfied with the library and its facilities. However, there are some individuals who are medially satisfied, while some are skeptical about it.

To commence with, full-time undergraduates have the highest percentage of students in library which is 44%. Following that, 25% of library users are full-time postgraduate, while 16% of them are part-time undergraduate. However, distance learning (all courses) is just 8%, accounted for one of the lowest percentages. Meanwhile, academic staff had the lowest percentage which was just 7%.

Moving on to the table, 65% of the individuals were satisfied by library open hours, while 35% were happy with the hours and no one was disatisfied. The highest percentage of students were satisfied by the staff which was 95% and 5% were fairly satified. Meanwhile, some people had concern regarding availibility of books, journals and reliability of wifi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main user group accurately: full-time undergraduates account for 44%, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%, and you also note the smallest groups. The overview recognises that satisfaction is generally positive, but the table is reported only selectively. For example, you give the opening-hours and staff figures, then say users had concerns about books, journals and Wi-Fi without reporting the key contrasts: books received 50% very satisfied, journals had the highest dissatisfaction at 20%, and Wi-Fi dissatisfaction was 19%. There is also a data error: 16% are part-time postgraduates, not undergraduates. Develop the overview and compare the satisfaction results more precisely to cover the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph on user categories and one on satisfaction. Sequencing phrases such as “To commence with” and “Moving on to the table” help signal the shift between visuals. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear. “Followed by, full-time postgraduates…” is a sentence fragment, and “while 35% were happy with the hours” repeats the same satisfaction category rather than clearly contrasting very and fairly satisfied responses. The final paragraph also lists three areas of concern without developing or comparing them. Use clearer links between figures and organise the table details into meaningful comparisons, especially where satisfaction levels differ.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary, including “cursory glance,” “percentage,” “satisfied,” and “reliability,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several choices are inaccurate or unsuitable for describing survey data. “Medially satisfied” is not a natural expression; “fairly satisfied” is the category shown. “Skeptical” suggests doubt rather than dissatisfaction, while “people who have enrolled themselves in all courses” is an awkward paraphrase of distance learners. There are also spelling errors, including “disatisfied,” “satified,” and “availibility.” Aim for precise, neutral chart language and check spelling; this would make your adequate vocabulary more accurate and appropriate to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex forms, and most of the information remains understandable. There are some errors in sentence construction and punctuation. “Followed by, full-time postgraduates and part-time graduates” is a fragment, while “full-time undergraduates have the highest percentage of students in library which is 44%” has an unclear relative clause. In “65% of the individuals were satisfied by library open hours, while 35% were happy with the hours,” the comma is not followed by a space, and the sentence does not clearly distinguish the satisfaction categories. Some article and number choices also need attention, as in “full-time postgraduate” when referring to a group. Build complete sentences and proofread punctuation and agreement while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
