Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the main features accurately: undergraduates are the largest user group (44%), academic staff the smallest (7%), staff helpfulness receives the strongest very-satisfied rating (95%), and journals have the highest dissatisfaction (20%). It also reports several relevant comparisons across the user categories and services, so the key information is covered and supported with figures. The overview is clear, although “most highest proportion” is imprecise, and the discussion of journals omits the 35% fairly satisfied figure. The phrase “45% of satisfied users” is also unclear because 45% refers specifically to users who were very satisfied. More precise descriptions of the satisfaction categories would make the reporting more complete and exact while retaining the strong selection of main features already present.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: an introduction, an overview, then separate paragraphs for user categories and service satisfaction. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “By contrast,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the comparisons, and the information is generally grouped appropriately. Some linking is a little mechanical, and the overview’s “Whereas” begins a fragment rather than a complete contrast. Within the final paragraph, “Finally” signals the move to wi-fi, but the relationship between the figures could be expressed more smoothly. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect comparisons directly—for example, contrast journals and wi-fi in one sentence—to make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted,” “constituted,” “represented,” “proportion,” and “dissatisfied.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “second capacity” should describe the second-largest group, “received the most positive level of satisfaction” is awkward, and “most highest proportion” is redundant. Spelling errors such as “staisfication,” “catagories,” “recieved,” and “avaiblibilty” are also noticeable. These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, but they weaken control of vocabulary. Prioritise accurate, natural collocations and careful proofreading over using a wide variety of near-synonyms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrasts introduced by “Whereas” and “By contrast,” and most information remains understandable. However, errors occur often enough to make grammatical control uneven. For example, “full-time undergraduate represented” needs a plural subject or an article, while “accounted the largest proportion” is missing “for.” The overview sentence beginning “Whereas” is incomplete, and “other remaining 5% is fairly satisfied” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly around “whereas” in the final sentence. Practise complete contrast clauses, subject–verb agreement, and accurate preposition patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
