IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The chart illustrates the percentage of library users at a university among different kind of categories, while the table shows the feedback of a survey of library users, which includes 5 questions/ parameters and the % of satisfaction is classified into 3 categories- Very satisfied, fairly satisfied and not satisfied.

Almost half of the library users (around 44%) are full-time undergraduate students. While, the full-time postgraduates and part-time graduates also hold significant share of 25% and 16% respectively. On the other hand, the share is least for Distance learning (8%) and Academic staff (7%).

According to the library survey, users are fairly satisfied with the library opening hours, none of the user voted for Not satisfied. The satisfaction% by the helpfulness of staffs is maximum for very satisfied category in this case (95%) while 5% of the remaining users were fairly satisfied. A fairly average feedback is seen among the other three categories (books availibility, journals availibility and reliability of wi-fi) , with percent in very satisiied users in each were 50%, 45%, 48% respectively, while in fairly satisfied were 40%, 35% and 33% respectively. for the last Not satisfied section, the share of % users was 10%, 20% and 19% respectively

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both visuals and report the main user groups accurately: undergraduates are the largest group at 44%, while academic staff are the smallest at 7%. You also include the satisfaction figures for all five aspects, including the strong result for staff helpfulness and the absence of dissatisfaction with opening hours. However, the response has no clear overall summary drawing out the main patterns across the table—for example, that staff helpfulness received the highest satisfaction and journals the greatest dissatisfaction. The phrase “a fairly average feedback” is also vague and does not clearly interpret the results. A concise overview and more explicit comparisons between the satisfaction categories would make the key features clearer and more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction identifies the two visuals, the next paragraph describes user categories, and the final paragraph reports satisfaction results. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “while” help show contrasts. The final paragraph, however, becomes dense as it lists three aspects and several sets of percentages in one long sentence. The transition from the user groups to the survey results could also be more deliberate, and the response would benefit from a separate overview paragraph. Grouping the satisfaction results into key patterns would improve progression and make the comparisons easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “share,” “satisfaction,” and “classified,” and terms such as “full-time undergraduate” identify the categories clearly. Some attempts at more formal phrasing are less natural or precise: “different kind of categories,” “hold significant share,” and “a fairly average feedback” are awkward in this context. There are also spelling errors in “availibility” and “satisiied,” and “staffs” is not the appropriate plural form here. These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Prefer standard chart language such as “user groups,” “accounted for,” and “received a moderate level of satisfaction,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the numerical relationships remain understandable. However, some sentence structures and agreement patterns are inaccurate. “While, the full-time postgraduates…” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence, and “none of the user voted” has a mismatch between the determiner and noun. In “the percent in very satisfied users in each were,” the structure is difficult to follow, while the final list beginning “for the last Not satisfied section” is not integrated smoothly into the sentence. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly after full stops. Use complete sentences, check singular and plural agreement, and divide the long final comparison into shorter, parallel clauses.
