IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie chart illustrates the categories of library users, whereas the table depicts the satisfaction level of the users after a questionnaire at a university.
Overall, it is clear that full-time undergraduates used the library most than others. Distance learning and academic staff bottomed the chart. On the other hand, people were satisfied by the helpfulness of staff. They were fairly satisfied by the availability of books. However, they were not satisfied by the reliability of wi-fi.
Full-time undergraduate dominated the chart at 44%, followed by the postgraduate at 25%. Part-time graduate visited library 16%. In contrast, distance learning for all courses and academic staff bottomed the chart with mere 8% and 7% respectively.
Moving to the table for more information about the satisfaction level, 65% individuals were very satisfied from library opening hours, and 35% were fairly satisfied. Furthermore, no one was not satisfied by this facility. Helpfulness of staff was very popular among people and got 95% of satisfaction and only 5% were fairly satisfied. Availability of books showed around 50% for satisfaction and 10% were not satisfied. From total 20% were not satisfied from availability of journals and rest were satisfied. Consequently, reliability of wi-fi observed 48% and 33% for very and fairly satisfaction, and 19% for not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview: undergraduates form the largest user group, while staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction, and wi-fi attracts notable dissatisfaction. Most figures are reported accurately, including the user-group percentages and the opening-hours and wi-fi results. The main weakness is some imprecision in interpreting the table. For example, “95% of satisfaction” should specify that 95% were very satisfied, and the books row is summarised as “around 50% for satisfaction” without reporting the 40% fairly satisfied figure. The statement that users “were fairly satisfied by the availability of books” also overgeneralises the split. More precise coverage of these distinctions would make the reporting more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a logical route through the two visuals, and transitions such as “Moving to the table” help signal the shift. However, some linking is mechanical or imprecise, particularly the repeated use of “Furthermore” and “Consequently,” where the relationship between points is not always causal. The final paragraph also moves through several rows in a list-like way, and “From total 20%” has an unclear reference. Grouping the satisfaction results into positive responses and areas of dissatisfaction, with clearer referencing, would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
There is adequate vocabulary for describing the visuals, including “illustrates,” “depicts,” “dominated,” and “followed by.” The writer also attempts a range of reporting expressions, so the meaning is generally clear. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this context: “bottomed the chart” is not an appropriate way to describe the smallest categories, “visited library” is less precise than describing users, and “very satisfied from” is an awkward collocation. “Full-time undergraduate” and “part-time graduate” also need more accurate category wording. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and avoid forcing synonyms where the original category labels are clearer. This would make the vocabulary more flexible and natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “The pie chart illustrates…, whereas the table depicts…” and several sentences with subordinate clauses. Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “used the library most than others” has an incorrect comparative structure, and “Full-time undergraduate dominated” needs a plural subject or an article. In “no one was not satisfied,” the negative construction changes the intended meaning; write “no one was dissatisfied” or “0% were not satisfied.” There are also errors in prepositions and sentence construction, such as “satisfied from library opening hours” and “From total 20%.” More careful checking of comparisons, articles, agreement, and negative forms would improve accuracy.
