IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The piechart illustrates the percentage of library users whereas the table compares the satisfaction level of users in the library.

Overall, the full time undergraduates cover the largest proportion of library users with academic staff being the least and the remaining proportion is covered by other students. The library users are mostly satisfied by helpful staff followed by library opening hours while other services comprising remaining satisfaction.

The full time undergraduates cover around 44% of library attendees, 25% users are the full time postgraduates followed by 16% of part-time postgraduates. The distance learning students of all courses account for only 8% of attendees whereas 7% of users are the academic staff.

For the satisfaction level, the helpful staff gains the highest satistaion of users standing at 95% with 5% fairly satisfied. The library opening hours satisfied 65% of users and 35% of users were farly satisfied. The availability of books, journals and reliabilityy of wifi satisfied the users within a coherent range as 50% , 45% and 48% were highly satisfied whereas 10,20 and 19% were not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both visuals and provide a clear overview: undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction. The figures you report for user categories are accurate, and the satisfaction figures for opening hours and helpfulness are also correct. You select relevant comparisons for books, journals and Wi-Fi, including their very-satisfied and not-satisfied proportions. However, the overview’s phrase “other services comprising remaining satisfaction” is vague, and the final comparison omits the fairly satisfied figures for these three services. Clarify that satisfaction is mixed across these services and identify journals as having the highest dissatisfaction. This would make the key features more fully developed and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a logical route through both visuals, and phrases such as “whereas” and “followed by” help signal comparisons. The main weakness is that some links are broad or unclear. For example, “while other services comprising remaining satisfaction” does not explain how the other ratings compare, and “within a coherent range” is not a precise description of the figures. Use clearer transitions to group the highly rated services separately from those with more dissatisfaction, and make each comparison explicit. Overall, the progression is easy to follow, though cohesion is not consistently precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “account for,” “availability,” and “satisfaction,” which allows you to describe the chart and table. Some choices are imprecise or awkward for formal data reporting: “library attendees” is less suitable than “library users,” and “the helpful staff gains the highest satisfaction” is not a natural collocation. There are also spelling errors in “satistaion,” “farly,” and “reliabilityy,” alongside inconsistent forms such as “full time.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Aim for standard collocations such as “users were very satisfied with staff helpfulness” and proofread spelling and hyphenation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and “while,” and most of the information remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist. In “the full time undergraduates cover the largest proportion,” the present-tense verb is awkward for describing chart data; “account for” would fit better. The clause “while other services comprising remaining satisfaction” is incomplete, and “The library opening hours satisfied 65% of users” uses an unsuitable subject-verb relationship. The final sentence also needs clearer parallel structure when listing the three services and their percentages. Practise complete clauses, accurate subject-verb relationships and parallel comparisons; these changes would improve control without sacrificing sentence variety.
