IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of five categories of library members, while the table represents the data of level of satisfaction in three main levels, carried out during a survey of university library.

Overall, a glance at the diagrams reveals that library is substantialy occupied by full-time undergraduates, on the other hand it was least significantly contibuted by academic staff. Furthermore, users are very satisfied with helpfulness of staff and not satisfied with availability of journals.

The full-time undergraduate accounted for 44% of the total share representing the most significant contributor, after this full-time postgraduate contributed with quater shares, this was then followed by part-time postgraduate, distance learning and academic staff with 16%, 8% and 7% of the entire proportions.

Users were very satisfied with helpfulness of staff with stands at 95%, satisfaction levels varied among the reliablity of wifi, availabilty of journals with just below 50% of users very satisfied and less than 25% not satisfied. Availabilty of books had very satisfied 50% of the users, while libraray opening hours satisfied 65% in the first category (i.e. very satsified) and the remaing 35% were fairly satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both visuals and identify several important features accurately: undergraduates form the largest user group at 44%, academic staff the smallest at 7%, and staff helpfulness receives the highest very-satisfied rating at 95%. Your overview also notes the low satisfaction with journals, which is supported by the table. The user-category figures are reported clearly, and you include useful comparisons for opening hours and books. However, the satisfaction discussion is less complete: you do not report the fairly/not-satisfied figures for most categories, and the statement that journal dissatisfaction is notable would be stronger with its exact 20% figure. The overview is relevant, but a more systematic selection of satisfaction results would make the coverage more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a paragraph on satisfaction. This gives the reader a sensible progression through the two visuals, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “while” help connect points. The organisation is coherent, but some connections are awkward or unclear. For example, “after this” and “this was then followed by” repeat the same sequencing function, while the final satisfaction paragraph moves between wi-fi, journals, books, and opening hours without a consistent comparison pattern. The overview’s “on the other hand” also creates a stronger contrast than necessary. Grouping satisfaction results by high and lower ratings, and using clearer references, would make cohesion more flexible and precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “satisfaction levels,” and “contributor.” These choices show an attempt to describe data rather than rely only on basic words. However, some expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “substantialy occupied,” “least significantly contibuted,” and “quater shares.” There are also spelling errors in words such as “reliablity,” “availabilty,” and “libraray,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Phrases such as “the data of level of satisfaction” are also imprecise for describing a table. Aim for standard chart language and check spelling carefully; this will make your adequate range more reliable and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “five categories … carried out during a survey.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the data of level of satisfaction … carried out” has an unclear clause attachment, and “The full-time undergraduate accounted” uses an awkward singular construction for a category. In “Users were very satisfied with helpfulness of staff with stands at 95%,” the clause structure is faulty and the article before “helpfulness” is missing. Several sentences also lack clear grammatical links between comparisons. Practise accurate article use, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
