Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given illustration shows the diversity of library users in terms of their courses and compares their feedbacks about various services.

The library is most often used by the full time bachelor students which account for a bit less than half of total book readers. The second most visitors are the students enrolled in the masters programme and they call of for around 1/4th of the visitors in the library. Part-timers for same type of degree are also seen to use the facility. Apart from these, Distance learners and the academic staff have almost equal usage of the service. They in total account for around 16 percent of usage, levelling with distance learning students.

Although there is no such service where majority of the users are not satisfied, people are indeed not happy with some of the happenings. One major problem is that the library lacks the availibility of journals. Many people also question the reliability of the wifi. One appreciating factor of the library could be the behaviour of staff, which the users have highly appreciated. Overall people are just about satisfied with the availibilty of staff and they don't have much issue with the opening hours as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the largest user group correctly as full-time undergraduates and give a reasonable comparison with full-time postgraduates. You also select relevant satisfaction features, noting staff helpfulness and concerns about journals and Wi-Fi. However, some figures and comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: part-time postgraduates and distance learners together make up 24%, while academic staff and distance learners together make up 15%, not 16%; these groups are not “almost equal” individually either. The overview is also incomplete because it does not clearly summarise the strongest satisfaction results and the range of responses across all services. Develop the key comparisons more precisely, including that staff helpfulness has the highest satisfaction and opening hours receive no dissatisfaction.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: it first describes the user categories and then turns to satisfaction, with linking expressions such as “Apart from these” and “Although” helping signal shifts. The main points can generally be followed. However, some references and connections are difficult to interpret, especially “They in total account for around 16 percent of usage, levelling with distance learning students,” where it is unclear which groups “they” refers to and what is being compared. The final paragraph also moves between dissatisfaction, staff praise and opening hours without a fully clear progression. Use a concise overview and organise the satisfaction comparisons from strongest to weakest, with explicit references to each category.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “diversity,” “reliability,” “availability” and “account for,” and the meaning is usually clear. Some choices are imprecise or informal for describing survey data: “book readers” does not accurately describe library users, “happenings” is vague, and “people are indeed not happy” is less suitable than a neutral description of dissatisfaction. There are also spelling errors in “availibility” and “availibilty,” and “feedbacks” is not the natural form here. Aim for precise, consistent terms such as “respondents,” “users,” “satisfaction” and “dissatisfaction,” and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the relative clause in “students enrolled in the masters programme.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical control is uneven, however. For example, “The second most visitors are” has an incorrect comparative construction, while “they call of for around 1/4th” contains an unnecessary or malformed verb phrase. “Part-timers for same type of degree” also lacks an article and is not a complete, well-formed sentence. Work on comparative structures, articles and complete sentence patterns, while retaining the complex forms you already attempt.
