IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the categories of library users, while the table shows the library user satisfaction.
Over, in the pie chart, full time undergraduate occupied most of the portion, making it the highest people who use the library. Academic staff, whereas, considered as the lowest category of library user. In terms of satisfaction, majority of the people were satisfied with helpfulness of staff. Likewise majority were disatisfied with journals availability
Full time undergraduate occupied 44% in the pie chart, which is by far the highest proportion. 25% was occupied by postgraduate who work full time and followed closely by part-time postgraduate, made up at 16%. The least proportion was shown by Distance learning from all courses and Academic staff, at 8% and 7% respectively.
In the table, 95% were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff and the remaining 5% were fairly satisfied. For library opening hours, 65% of the individuals were fully satisfied, while the 35% were fairly satisfied and none were disatisfied. Half of the people were very satisfied with the availability of books, the rest 40% were fairly satisfied and the remaining 10% were disatisfied.
Availability of journals comparitively showed lower figures than the books availability. 45% were very satisfied, 35% being fairly satisfied and 20% not satisfied. Finally, 48% of the people were satisfied with reliability of wi-fi, 33% were fairly satisfied and the remaining 19% dissatisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both visuals and report the main user groups and satisfaction results, with figures that are generally accurate. The overview identifies full-time undergraduates as the largest group and academic staff as the smallest, and highlights strong satisfaction with staff help and weaker satisfaction with journals. You also include the key percentages for each category, which makes the summary informative. However, the overview is brief and one statement is imprecise: “majority were dissatisfied with journals availability” is not accurate, since 20% were not satisfied, while 80% were at least fairly satisfied. The final comparison of wi-fi also says 48% were “satisfied” rather than specifying “very satisfied.” A more precise overview comparing the strongest and weakest satisfaction results would make the key features clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and two paragraphs covering satisfaction results. This sequencing helps the reader follow the two visuals, and linking expressions such as “In terms of,” “For,” and “Finally” support progression. The organisation is coherent, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Over, in the pie chart” does not introduce the overview naturally, and “Academic staff, whereas” leaves the contrast grammatically incomplete. The overview also moves quickly between the two visuals without clearly framing the comparison. Use a direct overview and connect related findings more explicitly, while keeping the useful paragraph structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “availability,” “reliability,” and “satisfied,” and the reader can understand the comparisons. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “occupied” and “comparitively,” though these are not always natural or accurate in context. Several spelling and word-choice slips reduce precision: “disatisfied” and “comparitively” are misspelled, while “occupied” is awkward for describing a share of users. “Fully satisfied” is also less precise than the table’s category, “very satisfied.” Aim for consistent, accurate collocations and use the exact satisfaction labels from the visual. This would improve precision without requiring a much wider vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentence forms, and many figures are presented in understandable sentences. For example, “For library opening hours, 65% … while the 35% were fairly satisfied” uses a contrast clause, and the response generally communicates the data clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in sentence construction and articles. “Academic staff, whereas, considered as the lowest category” is an incomplete clause; “making it the highest people who use the library” has an unclear structure; and “the 35%” uses an unnecessary article. There are also inconsistent sentence patterns when listing percentages. Build complete clauses with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles and agreement. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
