Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of categories of library users in a university. The table provides data about the proportion of satisfaction in five types of library services.

Overall, It is clear that full-time undergraduate students accounted for the largest population of library users, whereas academic staff represents the smallest proportion. In terms of satisfaction, majority of the library users are satisfied by helpfulness of staff and library opening hours. However, some are dissatisfied by services like journals, books, and reliability of wifi.

Regarding the proportion of library, full-time undergraduate students accounted for 44% of total proportion, making it by far the largest group. Whereas, full-time postgraduate students being the second largest group, with the proportion of 25%. Followed by, part-time postgraduate students with a share of 16%. However, academic staff and distance learning are the smallest groups, with the proportion of 7% and 8% respectively.

As for satisfaction, 95% of library members were very satisfied by helpfulness of staff, while only 5% were fairly satisfied. Library opening hours also received a positive feedback, 65% were very satisfied and 35% were fairly dissatisfied. However, satisfaction was lower for availability of books, journals and wifi. only 45-50 percent were satisfied with these services, while dissatisfaction reached 20% for journals, 19% for wifi and 10% for books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview: undergraduates are the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and satisfaction is strongest for staff helpfulness and opening hours. Most figures are reported accurately, including the user-group shares and the 95% very-satisfied result for staff. However, one important detail is misreported: 35% were fairly satisfied with opening hours, not “fairly dissatisfied.” The summary also over-generalises when it says only 45–50% were satisfied with books, journals and wi-fi, since this appears to refer only to very satisfied users and excludes those fairly satisfied. Clarify that distinction and report the combined satisfaction levels or compare the categories more precisely to make the key features fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the user categories and then satisfaction results. This makes the information easy to follow, and phrases such as “Regarding” and “As for” signal the shift between visuals. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward: “Whereas” and “Followed by” are used as sentence fragments, and “However” does not always express a genuine contrast. The overview also groups the less-satisfied services together without clearly distinguishing the different satisfaction levels. To strengthen progression, connect comparisons within complete sentences and use references that make clear whether percentages mean very satisfied, fairly satisfied, or not satisfied.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the charts, with useful terms such as “accounted for,” “proportion,” “share,” and “dissatisfied.” The writer also varies some wording rather than repeating “percentage” throughout. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “largest population” is less suitable than “largest group,” “total proportion” is unclear, and “positive feedback” does not accurately describe a satisfaction percentage. “Fairly dissatisfied” also changes the meaning of the data, while “wifi” would be better presented consistently as “Wi-Fi.” Aim for precise chart language and accurate satisfaction labels; this will improve clarity without requiring more elaborate vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. The opening and several comparisons are expressed clearly. Some grammatical errors nevertheless occur, particularly in sentence boundaries and agreement. “Whereas, full-time postgraduate students being the second largest group” and “Followed by, part-time postgraduate students” are fragments; combine them with the preceding sentence or make them complete clauses. In the overview, “It” is incorrectly capitalised after the comma, and “academic staff represents” should agree with the plural noun phrase. The sentence beginning “Library opening hours also received a positive feedback” also needs clearer punctuation between its two clauses. Check complete sentence structure, agreement, and punctuation during revision.
