IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and treble table represent the statistical outcome of survey conducted on the library users at a university. The pie-chart here depicts the proportion of library users from different categories whereas the table shows percentage of users having different satisfaction levels based on five criteria.
Looking at the pie chart it is evident that nearly half of the total library users are full-time undergraduate which is 44% and this is the highest fraction in chart. 25% of the users are full time postgraduates which comes after full-time undergraduates. Among the users, only 7% users are academic staffs which is the lowest fraction and learners doing online courses account for 8% slightly higher than the portion of the academic staffs. Those who are doing part-time postgraduation there account for 16%, which is a moderate percentage.
In the table it is noticeable that, 65% of library users are highly satisfied with the library opening time whereas 35% users are fairly satisfied. It is evident that staffs are very helpful as 95% users are very satisfied which is the highest in terms of all criteria. It is visible that more than 45% users are very satisfied in terms of book availability, journals availability and dependability of wifi network. 20% and 19% of users are not satisfied with availability of journals and wifi reliability, while only 10% of them are dissatisfied with availability of books.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main user groups and several important satisfaction results accurately, including undergraduates as the largest group (44%), academic staff as the smallest (7%), and staff helpfulness as the strongest result (95% very satisfied). You also report the dissatisfaction figures for books, journals and wi-fi. However, the response lacks a clear overall summary of the table’s broad pattern, and some comparisons are incomplete: for example, opening hours and staff helpfulness have no dissatisfied users, a notable feature worth highlighting. The statement that more than 45% are very satisfied with books, journals and wi-fi is imprecise and obscures the differences between 50%, 45% and 48%. Develop the overview and report the contrasts more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction is followed by a paragraph on user categories and one on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to distinguish, and linking phrases such as “Looking at the pie chart” and “In the table” guide the reader through the information. The progression within each paragraph is generally logical, moving from the largest and smallest groups to other categories, then from opening hours to the remaining criteria. To make the organisation more effective, add a concise overview before the detailed figures and group related satisfaction results—for instance, the two criteria with no dissatisfaction, then the areas with higher dissatisfaction. Some transitions, such as “It is evident” and “It is visible,” are repeated and could be varied or omitted.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing proportions and survey results, including “proportion,” “highest fraction,” “very satisfied,” and “dissatisfied.” The meaning is generally clear, and terms such as “dependability” show an attempt to use less common wording. However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for this task: “treble table” is not an appropriate description, “library opening time” is less accurate than “opening hours,” and “academic staffs” uses an unsuitable plural form. “Moderate percentage” is also vague when reporting a specific share. Aim for standard chart language and precise collocations, such as “accounted for,” “the largest share,” and “satisfaction with the availability of journals.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “whereas” and “which,” and most of the information remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “survey conducted” needs an article (“a survey was conducted”), and “full-time undergraduate” should be plural when referring to the group. The phrase “Those who are doing part-time postgraduation there account for 16%” has an awkward, unclear structure; a direct construction such as “Part-time postgraduate students account for 16%” would be more controlled. Punctuation after introductory phrases is also inconsistent, as in “it is noticeable that, 65%.” Review these patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
