Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and table compares the information gathered from a survey on library users at a university comparing the different categories of library users and their satisfaction rate. The unit is measured in percentage.

Overall, it is evident that the highest proportion of of library users are full-time undergraduate, while academic staff use the library the least. Most library users are most satisfied with how helpful the librarians are and are least satisfied by the percentage of books available.

The highest percentage of library users are the full-time undergraduate amounting for 44% of library patron, while full time postgraduate and part-time postgraduate students account for exactly a quarter of users and a small minority at 25% and 16% respectively. Compared to students learning from a distance and academic staff that amount for the smallest proportion of users with 8% and 7% respectively.

While vast majority of library user are most satisfied with how helpful the librarians are, only 5% of the users are fairly satisfied with the staff performers. About 50% and 48% of the students respectively are pleased with the books and journals available at the library, while 10% less than others users are fairly pleased. A large proportion of students about 65% of them are very pleased with open hours and 35% of them are fairly pleased compared to those that are very pleased with the wi-fi that sum-up 48% and fairly pleased at 33%. Those that are unpleased with the books available in the library amount of 10% of users in contrast, with dissatisfaction rate of the journals available that is two times more than books and slightly less are unpleased with the wi-fi at 19% of users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers both the user categories and satisfaction table, and its overview identifies the largest and smallest user groups as well as the strongest satisfaction result. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 44% undergraduate share, 95% satisfaction with staff helpfulness, and the 65% figure for opening hours. This largely fulfils the task and shows some selection of key features. However, the overview says users are least satisfied with the availability of books, whereas journals have the highest dissatisfaction (20%, compared with 10% for books). The comparison of satisfaction with books and journals is also unclear: 50% and 45% are very satisfied, not 50% and 48%. More precise reporting of the table’s categories and a fully accurate overview would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of user categories and satisfaction. This gives the reader a coherent overall route through the information. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Compared to,” and “While” help connect points, but some transitions are awkward or make relationships unclear. For example, “Compared to students learning from a distance and academic staff that amount for the smallest proportion” is not a complete, clear comparison, and the final paragraph moves between staff, books, opening hours, wi-fi, and dissatisfaction in a crowded sequence. Grouping the satisfaction results more systematically—perhaps positive ratings first, then dissatisfaction—would improve progression. Clearer sentence boundaries and references would also reduce the occasional mechanical feel.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

There is an adequate range for describing the charts, including “highest proportion,” “smallest proportion,” “account for,” and “dissatisfaction rate.” These choices show an attempt to vary vocabulary rather than repeat basic terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “amounting for,” “staff performers,” “open hours,” and “unpleased.” “Pleased” also suggests personal enjoyment rather than the survey’s satisfaction category, so consistent use of “satisfied” would be more precise. Some repetition of “users” and “percentage” could be reduced by using terms such as “respondents” or “share.” The meaning remains generally understandable, but more accurate collocations and consistent chart terminology would make the description clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “while” and “compared to,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. The opening sentence has subject–verb disagreement (“The pie chart and table compares”), and “the highest percentage … are” also mismatches subject and verb. There are article, number, and sentence-construction problems in phrases such as “44% of library patron” and “Compared to students … that amount for the smallest proportion.” The long final sentence contains several clauses joined without clear control, making the comparisons harder to follow. Aim for shorter, complete sentences and check agreement, singular/plural forms, and clause structure while retaining some complex sentences.
