Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The data given in the pie chart and the table reflects the results of a review done by the customers of the library of an university.

Overall, the pie chart highlights all the categories of library users in which majority are full time undergraduate and postgraduate while the part-time postgraduate, distance learning and academic staff fills the rest of the gaps. The table reflects the data about satisfaction levels of the people and it is clear that majority is satisfied with library opening hours and helpfulness of staff than the other three satisfactory reasons which have mixed results.

There are 44% full-time undergraduate users of the library consisting the largest portion of the pie chart which is second by full-time postgraduates that are 25%. 16% of the pie chart is occupied with part-time postgraduates that is the third highest category of library users while all courses and academic staff have 8% and 7% contribution respectively.

On the other hand, the library opening hours and the staff are highly satisfying as 65% and 95% user are highly satisfied with both the elements respectively with 0 unsatisfaction. People are not much happy with the availabily of journals as 20% people are unsatisfied with it while 45% of highly satisfied. The data shows that wifi is not good since 48% are highly satisfied, 33% feel normal and 19% of users are not satisfied at all. The availability of books is fair as 50% users are happy, 40% are fine and 10% can not get the books they want.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview: undergraduates are the largest user group, while satisfaction is strongest for staff helpfulness and opening hours. Most figures are reported accurately, including the user-category shares and the satisfaction results for journals, books and Wi-Fi. This supports a well-developed account of the main features. A few descriptions are imprecise: “all courses” is not the chart category (it is distance learning across all courses), and “feel normal” does not accurately describe the 33% who are fairly satisfied with Wi-Fi. Also, the overview could compare the satisfaction results more precisely, noting that staff helpfulness leads and that opening hours have no dissatisfied users. These small over-generalisations limit the precision of an otherwise strong response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into a brief introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the user categories and satisfaction data. This gives the reader a clear route through both visuals, and transitions such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal the structure. The main progression is logical, but cohesion is not always smooth: the overview’s phrase “fills the rest of the gaps” is vague, and the final paragraph moves between several satisfaction categories without a consistent comparison pattern. Some references, such as “both the elements,” are also less clear than naming the opening hours and staff helpfulness directly. To strengthen the organisation further, group the satisfaction results by high satisfaction and by comparatively weaker ratings, using clear links between the figures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses relevant task vocabulary, including “categories,” “largest portion,” “satisfaction levels,” and “unsatisfied,” so the main information remains understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal, which restricts precision: “review done by the customers” misrepresents a survey, “highly satisfying” is not the natural description of respondents’ ratings, and “feel normal” is vague. There are also spelling and form errors, including “availabily” and “wifi.” Aim for standard chart-reporting language and use the table’s exact rating labels consistently. More precise terms such as “respondents,” “very satisfied,” and “accounted for” would make the description more natural and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which is second by full-time postgraduates”) and a subordinate clause introduced by “as.” Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “an university” has an incorrect article, “majority are” lacks a clear singular construction, and “There are 44% … consisting the largest portion” has an awkward and incomplete grammatical pattern. Agreement is also inconsistent in “95% user are highly satisfied.” These errors rarely prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and sometimes make relationships between figures harder to follow. Use complete, controlled comparison structures, such as “Undergraduates accounted for 44%, making them the largest group,” and check articles and subject–verb agreement.
