IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart and table illustrates information about library users at a univerisity.
The library users are full-time under and post graduates, part-time post graduates, distant learners and academic staff and the user satisfaction is marked over five qualities.
Overall, full-time undergraduates are the highest proportion of library users followed by full-time post graduate students, part-time graduates and distance learners. The lowest proportion of library users are the academic staff. The helpfulness of staff is the main reason for user satisfaction and none reported to be dis-satisfied. The library opening hours and availability of books are also higher in percentage satisfaction while the non-availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi were the reasons due to which users were not satisfied.
Around 44% of library users were full-time undergraduates, 25% full-time postgraduates. 16% part-time postgraduates and 8% distance learning and lowest were the academic staff at 7%.
Around 95% of people were satisfied due to the staff helpfulness and no one reported to be dis-satisfied. Library opening hours were second in satisfaction percentage with 65% being completely and 35%

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main user group accurately (44% full-time undergraduates) and give the remaining category figures correctly. Your overview also recognises staff helpfulness as the strongest satisfaction result and identifies journals and Wi-Fi as areas with more dissatisfaction. This covers the task’s main features and shows some selection and comparison. However, the satisfaction data are only partly reported: the response stops during the opening-hours comparison and does not give the figures for books, journals or Wi-Fi, despite discussing them in the overview. Also, “non-availability of journals” is not what the table measures; it reports satisfaction with availability. To strengthen the response, complete the comparisons and distinguish clearly between very, fairly and not satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs beginning to report the figures. The overview helps the reader understand the main patterns before the details, and phrases such as “followed by” establish a basic comparison. However, the detailed reporting is not balanced: the user categories are presented together, while the satisfaction section ends abruptly after “35%” and leaves the other qualities without supporting figures. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly the long overview sentence that combines opening hours, books, journals and Wi-Fi. Use separate, clearly ordered sentences for the satisfaction results and connect each comparison explicitly to its category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction,” “helpfulness” and “reported,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some useful variation in describing the groups, but several choices are inaccurate or awkward for this chart: “distant learners” should be “distance learners,” “full-time under and post graduates” is unclear, and “non-availability of journals” changes the meaning of the measured category. “Completely” is also not a precise substitute for “very satisfied.” Spelling slips such as “univerisity” and “dis-satisfied” reduce control. Aim for consistent, accurate labels from the chart and use standard collocations such as “were very satisfied with” and “the availability of journals.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “The helpfulness of staff…” and the comparison introduced by “while.” Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but some grammatical errors and incomplete structures remain. The opening says “The pie chart and table illustrates,” where the compound subject requires “illustrate.” The phrase “Around 95% of people were satisfied due to the staff helpfulness” has an awkward grammatical relationship between satisfaction and its cause; “were very satisfied with the helpfulness of staff” would be clearer. The final sentence is incomplete, ending “35%” without stating what that figure represents. Check subject–verb agreement and ensure every sentence has a complete comparison or clause.
