Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart and table illustrate the analysis of a survey held at a university for its library users.

Overall, it is readily apparent that among the categories of library users, full-time undergraduates contributed the highest proportion, whereas the least were academic staff. Looking towards the satisfaction level of users, most of the users were very satisfied, while the least were not satisfied.

Delving deeper into the details, in the pie chart, among the category of library users, the full-time undergraduate is the dominant category, represented as 44%, while full-time postgraduate is slightly more than half of it (25%). Furthermore, part-time postgraduate accounted for 16%, while the share of distance learning was just half of it. The academic staff users accounted for only 7% of the share.

In terms of library users' satisfaction, the table represents three categories of satisfaction level. 65% of users were very satisfied with library opening hours, while 35% of them were fairly satisfied. Regarding the helpfulness of staff, most of the users were very satisfied, accounting for 95%, and the remaining were fairly satisfied (5%). For the availability of books, half of the consumers were very satisfied, whereas 40% and 10% of them were fairly and not satisfied. Furthermore, 45% of consumers were very satisfied with the availability of journals, whereas 35% expressed fairly satisfied and 20% were not satisfied. With the reliability of Wi-Fi, 48% of users were very satisfied, 33% were fairly satisfied, and the remaining 19% were not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers both visuals and reports the key figures accurately, including the largest user group (44% full-time undergraduates), the smallest (7% academic staff), and satisfaction results across all five services. The overview identifies the main contrasts, and the detailed paragraphs support it with relevant data. The statement that most users were very satisfied is broadly supported by the table, although satisfaction varies by service: helpfulness of staff is especially high, while journals and Wi-Fi receive lower ratings. To make the overview more analytical, highlight these contrasts explicitly and compare the less-satisfied categories, rather than relying mainly on a general summary. Overall, the task is addressed clearly and the selected information is well supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories, and a paragraph covering satisfaction. Information is generally sequenced logically, and linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “Regarding,” and “In terms of” help guide the reader. However, the repeated use of similar transitions and the formulaic listing of each table row make the final paragraph feel somewhat mechanical. Some references, such as “the remaining,” require the reader to infer which satisfaction category is meant, even though the figures make this understandable. To strengthen progression, group the services by pattern—for example, staff and opening hours versus books, journals, and Wi-Fi—and use more varied, precise links between comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to describe the visuals, with useful terms such as “proportion,” “accounted for,” “dominant category,” and “reliability.” Meaning remains clear throughout. However, some choices are awkward or imprecise for this type of report: “the analysis of a survey” suggests an analysis rather than survey results, “consumers” is not the most suitable label for library users, and “expressed fairly satisfied” is an unnatural collocation. Repetition of “users,” “satisfied,” and “accounted for” also limits flexibility. Aim for concise, conventional chart language and vary expressions for proportions and ratings while keeping the tone formal and neutral.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response uses a range of sentence forms, including subordinate clauses and contrast structures, as in “while full-time postgraduate is slightly more than half of it” and “whereas 35% of them were fairly satisfied.” Most sentences are clear, and the figures are presented in grammatically controlled clauses. A few errors or awkward constructions remain: “among the category” should be plural or recast, and “45% … whereas 35% expressed fairly satisfied” lacks a grammatical complement after “expressed.” There is also some inconsistent singular/plural phrasing, such as “the full-time undergraduate is the dominant category.” Review noun number and ensure verbs such as “expressed” take an appropriate object or clause. These issues do not obscure the information.
