Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the five categories of library users as result of a survey while the table depicts the library user satisfaction percentage.

Overall, the highest percentage of library users are full time undergraduates followed by full-time postgraduates. The least usage of library is by the Academic staff. Moreover, the criteria with the highest satisfaction percentage is Helpfulness of staff, followed by library opening hours and availability of books. The not satisfied percentage is found on three criterias; availability of books, availability of journals and reliability of wi-fi.

The pie chart shows that out of a 100%, the 44% of library users are full-time undergraduates while 25% are full-time postgraduates. 16% account for part-time postgraduates whereas 8% of users are the ones with distance learning (all courses) and the smallest percentage of academic staff with a 7%.

The table introduces the library user satisfaction percentage where each criteria is of a 100%. The first criteria is library opening hours and 65% users are very satisfied while 35% are fairly satisified. The highest satisfaction percentage is from the helpfulness of staff with a 95% whereas only 5% are fairly satisfied. Moreover, 50% users are very satisfied from the availability of books while 40% are fairly satisfied and 10% not satisfied. The availability of journals has 45% users very satisfied, 35% fairly satisfied and 20% not satisfied. Lastly, 48% users are very satisfied from the reliability of wi-fi, 33% are fairly satisfied and 19% are not satisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers both visuals and gives a clear overview of the main patterns: full-time undergraduates form the largest user group, academic staff the smallest, and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating. The figures reported for both the user categories and satisfaction rows are accurate, and the overview also identifies the three areas with some dissatisfaction. This is a well-supported account of the data. To make the summary more selective and analytical, draw out a key contrast in the table—for example, journals have the highest dissatisfaction, while opening hours have none—and compare the two satisfaction measures more directly. The overview’s phrase “highest satisfaction percentage” could also be made more precise by specifying that it refers to the “very satisfied” category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The organisation is clear and easy to follow: an introduction is followed by an overview, then separate paragraphs describing the chart and table. The sequence within the table paragraph is logical, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” help guide the reader. This gives the response a consistent progression. Some connections are nevertheless a little mechanical, particularly the repeated “The first criteria,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” pattern. The overview also lists several findings without explicitly contrasting them. Use a wider range of comparison structures, such as “whereas” or “by contrast,” and make references between related figures more explicit to create smoother cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the visuals, and terms such as “percentage,” “account for,” “very satisfied,” and “reliability” communicate the data clearly. The writer also uses relevant category labels accurately. However, some phrasing is repetitive or imprecise, including repeated use of “percentage” and “criteria,” and expressions such as “the least usage of library” and “users are very satisfied from” are not natural collocations. There are also spelling and form slips, notably “satisified” and “criterias.” Greater precision in describing proportions and satisfaction levels, alongside more natural collocations, would make the language more flexible and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “whereas,” and most meanings remain clear. There are some grammatical errors, however, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “as result of a survey” needs an article, and “The highest satisfaction percentage is from the helpfulness of staff with a 95%” is awkwardly structured. In “The first criteria is,” the singular form should be “criterion,” while the plural is “criteria.” Some sentences also rely on repeated “while” clauses rather than varying their structure. Review article use and singular/plural agreement, and practise concise comparisons to improve accuracy and range.
