Student answer (Band 5.0)
The chart and table below illustrate the results of a survey of library users at a university.
With the chart demonstrating the categories of library users. And the table demonstrates their satisfaction level with the library and its services.
Starting from the chart we notice that library users fall into 5 categories, which are :
Full-time undergraduates, with 44% of the total library users.
Full-time postgraduates, with 25% of the total library users.
Part-time postgraduates, with 16% of the total library users.
Distance learning including all courses, with 8% of the total library users.
And finally, the academic staff, with 7% of the total library users.
Moving to the table, which includes 4 services the library offers, in addition of the library opening hours, and also includes the satisfaction level of the previous categories mentioned, the 4 services are :
Helpfulness of staff, with 65% of library users satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied with it, while none was not satisfied.
Availability of books, with 50% of library users satisfied and 40% fairly satisfied with it, while 10% was not satisfied.
Availability of journals, with 45% of library users satisfied and 35% fairly satisfied with it, while 20% was not satisfied.
Reliability of WI-FI, with 48% of library users satisfied and 33% fairly satisfied with, while 19% was not satisfied.
Finishing with library opening hours, with 65% of library users satisfied with them, and 35% fairly satisfied and none of them is not satisfied with the opening hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response reports the user-category figures accurately and includes most satisfaction percentages, so the reader can identify the main data. However, the task is only partly addressed: there is no clear overview of the most notable patterns, such as staff helpfulness receiving the strongest satisfaction or journals having the highest dissatisfaction. More importantly, the table is misreported: helpfulness of staff is given as 65% satisfied, but the chart shows 95% very satisfied and 5% fairly satisfied. The introduction also says the table covers satisfaction among the previously listed user categories, whereas it compares five library features. Select the key contrasts, give an accurate overview, and distinguish the satisfaction categories correctly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the visuals, describes the user categories, and then moves to satisfaction results. This makes the information broadly followable. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, relying on phrases such as “Starting from the chart,” “Moving to the table,” and “Finishing with.” The category figures are presented as a list, and the final opening-hours result is separated from the other table data, even though it would fit naturally alongside them. The opening also uses sentence fragments beginning “With the chart…” and “And the table…”. Group the information into purposeful paragraphs, combine related comparisons, and use linking language that shows relationships rather than simply announcing each section.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart categories and services, with relevant terms such as “availability,” “satisfaction level,” and “reliability.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. “Library users” and “with … of the total library users” recur frequently, while “the previous categories mentioned” inaccurately suggests that the table reports results by user group. “Satisfied” is also used where the table’s specific label is “very satisfied,” which weakens precision. The spelling “WI-FI” is understandable, but standard presentation is “Wi-Fi.” Use a broader set of accurate reporting terms and preserve the distinctions in the table’s labels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer structures, including “with 44% of the total library users” and clauses introduced by “while,” but sentence patterns are often repetitive and several sentences are incomplete. “With the chart demonstrating…” and “And the table demonstrates…” are fragments rather than complete sentences. There are also errors in agreement and construction, for example “none was not satisfied” and “35% fairly satisfied with,” where the clause is missing a suitable verb or object. The colon-led lists and sentence openings with “And” contribute to uneven punctuation. Build complete sentences around the figures, vary simple and compound structures, and check that each clause has a clear subject and verb.
