Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Categories of library users

Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different categories of users at university library, while table provides the information on satisfaction level across 5 aspects of library services.

Overall, full-time undergraduates and full-time postgraduates contribute most in library usage, while the other three categories combine account for 31%. Furthermore, helpfulness of staff and library opening hours are the only ones with zero unsatisfied users but other services have unsatisfied users ranging from 10% to 20%.

Full-time undergraduates leads the proportion in pie chart contributing about 44%, followed by full-time postgraduates accounted for 25% in the usage of library. Academic staff, distance learning, and part-time postgraduates combine make up 31%.

Regarding satisfaction, helpfulness of staff has 95% highly satisfied users and remaining 5% are fairly satisfied with zero unsatisfied users. Library opening hours follows the same pattern as it has 65% very satisfied users and 35% fairly satisfied with zero dissatisfied users, while the other three services experience dissatisfaction by users ranging from 10% to 20%. Availability of books have 10% dissatisfaction, reliability of wi-fi have 19%, and availability of journal have 20% unsatisfied users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You identify the main features accurately: full-time undergraduates are the largest user group at 44%, and staff helpfulness and opening hours have no dissatisfied respondents. The overview also usefully contrasts these with the three services that do receive some dissatisfaction. Supporting figures for the user categories and the highest satisfaction ratings are generally correct. To make the account more complete and precise, include the satisfaction breakdowns for books, journals and Wi-Fi, not only their dissatisfied shares; for example, books are rated 50% very satisfied and 40% fairly satisfied. Also clarify that the three smaller user groups total 31%, rather than saying they “combine account” for this figure. The response selects relevant features and supports its overview, though some comparisons are left broad.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear progression: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on user categories and a final paragraph on satisfaction. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “Regarding satisfaction” help signal the stages of the summary. The final paragraph also groups the two services with no dissatisfaction before discussing the others. Some cohesion is less smooth where information is repeated: the overview and the category paragraph both state that the three smaller groups total 31%, and the last sentence repeats dissatisfaction figures already introduced. You could improve flow by using the overview for the main contrasts, then giving the remaining precise comparisons once in the detail paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction level,” “dissatisfaction” and “unsatisfied users,” and the meaning is consistently clear. There is some flexibility in how you describe the data, with phrases such as “contributing about 44%” and “ranging from 10% to 20%.” A few choices are imprecise or awkward for formal chart reporting: “contribute most in library usage” and “experience dissatisfaction by users” do not sound natural, while “highly satisfied” is less exact than the chart’s label “very satisfied.” “Library usage” is also repeated where “share of users” would be more precise. Aim for natural collocations and retain the chart’s satisfaction categories consistently; this would make the vocabulary more precise and polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “the other three categories combine account for 31%.” Most of the message remains understandable, but several agreement and sentence-construction errors prevent consistently accurate control. For example, “Full-time undergraduates leads” should be “Full-time undergraduates lead,” and “Availability of books have” should be “Availability of books has.” In “the other three categories combine account for 31%,” the verb pattern is faulty; write “the other three categories together account for 31%.” Articles are also missing in “at university library” and “while table provides.” These are generally local errors, but checking subject–verb agreement and article use would improve accuracy.
