Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart and table illustrate the outcome of a survey of different categories of library users at a university.
Overall, full-time undergraduates made up the the largest portion of library users, whereas academic staff accounted for the smallest share. Regarding satisfaction, the helpfulness of staff recieved the highest rating, while the availability of journals had the lowest level of satisfaction.
According to the pie chart full-time undergraduates represented 44% of library users, followed by full-time postgraduates at 25%. Part-time postgraduate accounted for 16% of library users, while distance learners made up 8%. The remaining 7% were academic staff.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main features and reports the figures accurately: undergraduates are identified as the largest group (44%), academic staff as the smallest (7%), and staff helpfulness as the strongest satisfaction result (95% very satisfied). It also correctly highlights journals as having the highest dissatisfaction (20%). The overview gives a clear summary of both visuals, and the body includes relevant comparisons across user categories and services. This is a strong, well-supported account of the task. To make the reporting more complete and precise, include the remaining satisfaction figures for wi-fi (33% fairly satisfied) and journals (35% fairly satisfied), and avoid describing 48% as simply “satisfied” when that figure specifically represents users who were very satisfied. These are small gaps in an otherwise effective response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information is organised clearly: an introduction is followed by an overview, then a paragraph on user categories and one on satisfaction. This sequence makes the two visuals easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “followed by,” “while,” and “Finally” help signal comparisons and progression. The response maintains a clear focus throughout. Some connections could be made more precise: “in comparison” introduces the journals result, but the comparison with books or wi-fi could be stated more explicitly. Also, the final paragraph contains several service details in quick succession, so grouping the strongest satisfaction results separately from the weaker ones could improve the flow. Overall, cohesion is effective, with only minor opportunities to refine transitions and grouping.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for describing the visuals, with useful terms such as “accounted for,” “represented,” “dissatisfaction rate,” and “positive feedback.” These allow the writer to report proportions and compare satisfaction levels. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, including “the outcome of a survey,” “best rated service,” and “very satisfies.” There are also spelling errors in “recieved,” “availablity,” and “availabilty,” which are noticeable even though the meaning remains clear. Aim for more precise, natural phrasing and proofread spelling carefully. For example, “the results of a survey,” “the highest-rated service,” and “very satisfied respondents” would fit this task more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses with “whereas” and “while,” and the meaning is consistently clear. Most sentences are well controlled, such as “The remaining 7% were academic staff.” Some grammatical errors remain. In “full-time undergraduates represented 44%,” the sentence needs a comma after the introductory reference to the chart; “in comparison” also begins a sentence without a capital letter. The phrase “with 65% of very satisfies and 35% fairly satisfied users” has a faulty construction, and “48% users” is missing an article or possessive determiner. Check sentence boundaries, articles, and the structure of percentage phrases to improve accuracy while retaining the range of sentence patterns already demonstrated.
