IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart and table below show the results of a survey of library users at a university.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Categories of library users
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart illustrates the information about categories of people visiting library, while table compares their satisfaction level among five services.
Overall, the major proportion of library users is held by full-time undergraduates, while the least contributions come from academic staff, very close number to distance learning. The visitors are very satisfied with library staff, however, the availability of journals is most unsatisfied service.
Among categories of library users, full-time undergraduates contribute quite close to the half of the total percentage around 44%, followed by full-time postgraduates next to it, which is 25%. Then comes part-time postgradautes with 16% of total number, while rest of two categories contributing almost same with difference of just 1%, distance learning (8%) and academic staff (7%).
As far as satisfaction is concerned, staff service (95%) is very satisified among all others, followed by opening hours (65%), both with zero percentage of not satisfied. However, visitors are 50% with availaibility of books, followed by Wi-Fi reliability (48%), availaibility of journals (45%), all with quite dissatisfaction, which are 10%, 19%, and 20% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main features accurately: full-time undergraduates form the largest group (44%), academic staff the smallest (7%), and staff helpfulness receives the strongest satisfaction rating (95%). Your overview also notes that journals attract the highest dissatisfaction (20%), and the body includes relevant comparisons across both visuals. This clear coverage and generally accurate selection support the response’s level. To make the account more fully developed, clarify that the table reports satisfaction ratings for five aspects of library service, rather than implying a single overall satisfaction level. Also report the 0% dissatisfaction for opening hours and staff helpfulness more explicitly, and distinguish the “very satisfied” figures from the combined satisfaction picture when describing books, journals and Wi-Fi.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for user categories and satisfaction. Information progresses logically, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Among categories,” and “As far as satisfaction is concerned” help signal each stage. Comparisons are also grouped sensibly, with the three service aspects that have notable dissatisfaction discussed together. Some connections are less precise, however: “followed by full-time postgraduates next to it” is an awkward way to express the ranking, and “all with quite dissatisfaction” makes the relationship between the figures unclear. Use more direct transitions and ensure each comparison clearly identifies which satisfaction column is being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “major proportion,” “followed by,” “reliability,” and “dissatisfaction,” so the main information remains understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the least contributions,” “very close number,” and “quite dissatisfaction.” There are also spelling errors in “postgradautes,” “satisified,” and “availiability.” These slips do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, but they limit precision and control. Prefer standard chart language such as “accounted for,” “a similar proportion,” and “the highest level of dissatisfaction,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “which is 25%.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the major proportion … is held by” uses an unsuitable passive construction, while “the rest of two categories contributing” lacks a finite verb. In “the availability of journals is most unsatisfied service,” the article and sentence structure are incomplete. There are also agreement and article issues in phrases such as “the least contributions come” and “among all others.” Build accuracy by using complete clauses and checking articles and subject–verb agreement; for example, “Full-time undergraduates account for the largest share.”
