Categories of library users

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates the proportion of different types of users who use the library of a university whereas the table gives information about the satisfaction level of the users.

Overall, the majority users of the library are the full-time undergraduate students while the academic staffs use it the least. Additionally, most user are satisfied with the services of the library in helpfulness of staff and library opening hours categories whereas some users are dissatisfied with the availability of journals.

Among the library users, 44% are occupied by the full-time bachelor students which makes them the majority users. On the other hand, the academic staffs are the least users who occupied only 7%. Full-time postgraduate, part-time postgraduate and distance learners of all courses represented 25%, 16% and 8% respectively.

In terms of satisfaction, 95% of users are very satisfied with helpfulness of staff wher only 5% users are fairly satisfied in this category, and there is no user who dissatisfied. In case of availability of journals 20% of users are not satisfied, where 45% and 35% users are very satisfied and fairly satisfied respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main user group and the smallest group accurately, and your overview also highlights strong satisfaction with staff helpfulness and dissatisfaction with journals. The figures you report for these categories are correct, and you include all five user categories. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the data. However, the satisfaction table is only partly covered: opening-hours results are mentioned in the overview but not supported with figures, and the results for books and wi-fi are omitted. The overview’s phrase “most users are satisfied” is also broad; the table shows variation across services. To strengthen the response further, select and compare the key satisfaction patterns across more categories, while keeping the accurate overview you already provide.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview and two detail paragraphs, with a logical shift from user categories to satisfaction results. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand” and “In terms of satisfaction” help readers follow this progression. The user-group figures are presented together, and the final paragraph focuses on two satisfaction categories, so the structure is easy to understand. Some cohesion could be more precise: “whereas” in the overview joins ideas that are not directly contrasted, and “In case of availability of journals” is an awkward transition. The satisfaction paragraph would also progress more fully if it covered the other services rather than moving directly from staff helpfulness to journals. Use clear comparisons to connect the table’s categories.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “satisfaction level,” “majority” and “dissatisfied,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “represented” and “occupied.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “occupied by” does not describe a share of library users, and “the least users” is not an appropriate way to describe the smallest group. “Academic staffs” is also an incorrect plural form, while “bachelor students” is less precise than the standard term for this category. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer established chart language such as “accounted for,” “the smallest proportion” and “academic staff,” and check collocations before using less familiar alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a clear introductory sentence with “whereas” and a comparison beginning “On the other hand.” Most relationships between ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “the majority users,” a determiner is needed, and “most user are” has a number-agreement error. The clause “the academic staffs are the least users who occupied only 7%” also has problems with the relative clause and verb form; a simpler construction would be clearer. In the final paragraph, “there is no user who dissatisfied” is missing a verb, and the long sentence beginning “In terms of satisfaction” would benefit from more controlled punctuation. Continue using complex structures, but check articles, agreement and complete verb phrases.
